Consultant In Neurology (MS)

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a unique organisation, serving as the sole integrated provider in the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire system. Our scope extends beyond boundaries as we oversee adult community services in Swindon and provide acute care from the Great Western Hospital.

Our 5,500 staff have 1.2m patient contacts a year, with 13,000 operations carried out in our Theatres, around 4,000 babies born, and our emergency attendances are now well over 100,000 per year. Those numbers only tell part of our story about what an exciting time it is to join Great Western Hospitals.

We are cultivating a culture that fosters our ambitions, prioritising equality, diversion, inclusion, wellbeing, and leadership. We aim to create an environment where every member of our team can truly thrive.

The Trust is a Disability Confident Employer; all applicants who have a disability can opt to be considered under the guaranteed interview scheme, which means that, providing they meet the minimum essential criteria for the post, they will be offered an interview. We are also proudly accredited as a Veteran Aware organisation and have signed The Armed Forces Covenant.

If we receive a high volume of applications, we may close adverts prior to the published closing date. Therefore, we advise you to complete and submit your application as soon as possible.

Consultant in Neurology

The Great Western Hospital is pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to Consultant Neurologists to join the existing team to enhance and drive forward the ongoing development of our service.

Are you looking to start your career as a Consultant in a friendly and supportive Neurology Department, or are you an existing Consultant looking for a new and exciting challenge where you can really make a difference?  Either way, we are a supportive and close knit team who are focussed on giving the very best care to our patients at all times and we would love to have you on board.

We are looking for enthusiastic and forward thinking Consultant Neurologists to help shape the service that we deliver to our patients who we care so passionately about.  We are continually looking to develop new ways of working so are excited to see what additional ways of working and practices you can bring to the team to further enhance the service we provide.  We encourage professional development. An interest and expertise in Multiple Sclerosis would be beneficial.

The successful candidate will be working closely with the existing team of Consultants to design pathways to improve the care we provide in our acute setting.  We believe that this is essential for us to provide a first class service where the patients and their relatives come first.

The Neurology team are well located in the Betjeman Centre, which is on the ground floor of GWH.  This is home to the department’s outpatient clinic rooms, day hospital, therapy centre and office space for the Consultant team and their secretarial support.

Our outpatient service covers a host of neurological conditions, such as General Neurology, MS, Epilepsy, MND, PD and cancer pathways, as well as specialist nurse led clinics for Epilepsy, MS and PD.  We provide an in-reach service providing specialist review of inpatients with suspected or confirmed neurological conditions. We run a Neurology Hot clinic service.  In addition to this, we also provide a Neurophysiology service, supporting both inpatients and outpatients with diagnostic services (EMG/NCS/EEG).

The team manages an Acute Stroke Service on Falcon Ward, which is an 18 bedded ward and provides care for hyperacute and acute stroke patients, as well as providing cover for Forest Ward for our post stroke rehabilitation patients and offering a seven day TIA service.

About The Great Western Hospital

GWH is a hospital that is on the up.  There has been significant investment and development in the Trust, with the recent completion of a Radiotherapy Centre, which means that patients will no longer need to travel to Oxford for treatment.  This represents a huge milestone for the Trust and, more importantly, improving levels of care for our patients.  Additionally, we have been successful in securing £15m to improve urgent and emergency care at GWH by replacing the current Urgent Care Centre with a new Urgent Treatment Centre.  This is in addition to our successful bid for £30m to expand and improve services as part of our Way Forward Programme.

About Swindon, Wiltshire and The Cotswolds

Swindon is a thriving town set between the Cotswolds to the North and West, the Upper Thames valley to the East and the Marlborough Downs to the South. London, Bristol and Oxford are all within easy reach, approximately one hour by car with good links by public transport.
