This is an important post that is key to the success of the organisation’s short-, medium- and long-term Capital programme. The post holder is expected to work at all levels in the organisation and demonstrate credibility with Corporate Senior Managers and Divisional teams.

The post holder will be responsible for the performance of the capital accounting function. This includes: the timely and accurate production of capital accounts; capital expenditure management, governance and reporting; capital prioritisation, planning and forecasting; and maintenance of the Trust’s fixed asset systems.

The postholder will be expected to act as the capital expert for the Trust and have excellent communication skills to develop effective working relationships with internal and external colleagues.

Main duties of the job

 The Finance Business Partner – Capital is managerially accountable to the Head of Financial Services and professionally accountable for ensuring duties are carried out in accordance with statutory regulations, NHSE’s financial directives, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the Trusts’ internal control, corporate governance and reporting requirements.  

You will be responsible for the production of the capital sections of the Trust’s monthly and annual accounts, supported by high quality working papers for sign off by the Head of Financial Services, in accordance with the Department of Health finance manual and associated guidance, to ensure that the Trust meets its statutory reporting requirements in relation to Capital.

In the finance department we are firmly on track to meet the One NHS Finance Level 2 Accreditation for Excellence in the next 12 months.  You will be offered a tailored Personal Development Plan to meet your needs and achieve your ambitions within NHS Finance.  We run internal management courses and are aligned to the Financial Staff Development Network, the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the South West Finance Academy, meaning that we are able to access multiple courses and resources to assist you in being able to excel in your new role.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at a senior level in financial accounts, including experience of final accounts, capital and asset management.
  • Advanced IT skills including spreadsheet, word and database
  • Experience of managing, developing and motivating a team.
  • Experience of problem solving and meeting tight deadlines in a challenging environment.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of NHS Capital Finance
Desirable criteria
  • Detailed working knowledge of the Foundation Trust finance regime and accounting requirements.
  • Knowledge of Five Case model
  • Financial accounts experience in an Acute NHS Trust.
  • Experience of PFI accounting

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • CCAB or CIMA Qualified Accountant with evidence of current membership
  • Evidence of undertaking Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
Desirable criteria
  • Educated to Degree Level or equivalent experience
