The department has UKAS accreditation to ISO151589:2012. It processes and reports, per year, approximately 23,000 surgical specimens (approximately 18,000 for the NHS with 16% from general practitioners), 1200 diagnostic cytopathology specimens and 1000 semenology samples.
These arise from a population of approximately 300,000.
Main duties of the job
The laboratory was designed in collaboration with the staff and has modern equipment including height adjustable dissection benches and a recently introduced Sakura Tissue-Tek Prisma® Plus automated slide stainer and coverslipper, and a Dako Omnis immunohistochemistry immunostainer. Another similar immunostainer is being brought in to meet the increasing demands of immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology. The laboratory currently operates with two digital scanners which are used on a daily basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Job advertisement is for the recruitment of two Consultants. The appointed candidates will join an existing team of 6 senior medical staff including Consultants. On joining the department, you will become part of a well-established, friendly team and will help us continue to drive forward improvements in the service that we provide to our patients. As a senior member of the team, you will become a key part in the delivery of training and supervision to our junior colleagues.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Fully registered with the GMC
- CCT (or equivalent for non-UK applicants of equivalent status), or be accredited (or equivalent), and be on the GMC Specialist Register in the specialty appropriate for this consultant post at the time of taking up the consultant appointment. Alternatively, candidates can hold or be within 6 months of their CCT at interview or have applied to be on the GMC Specialist register via CESR.
- FRCPath (UK) or equivalent
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical training/experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
- Expertise in full range of Cellular Pathology workload
- Ability to lead a multi-professional team and take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Sub-speciality interests will be supported. The department is particularly interested in pathologists practising hematopathology, gynaecological Pathology, uropathology and GI pathology.
Management Administration
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable ability to manage priorities
- Demonstrable multi-disciplinary team leadership skills
- Evidence of participation in audit and understanding basic principles of management
- Flexible approach to work organisation
- Evidence of management/leadership skills training
- Intermediate to Advanced level IT skills
Teaching & Research

- Ability to teach clinical skills to trainees, laboratory staff and multi disciplinary teams
- Interest in leading multi-professional education
- Publications in peer reviewed journals is desirable
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
