Job overview

We are currently looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Band 7 Radiographer to undertake Mammographic Breast Imaging for both Screening and Symptomatic services.

Ideally the candidate will have a post graduate qualification in Mammography and breast image interpretation although qualified Mammographers with sufficient experience but needing image interpretation will be considered.

The role encompasses working both at the Breast Centre at The Great Western Hospital and on the service’s two mobile units which travel around Wiltshire.

The post holder will be expected to carry out routine breast screening and the more specialist mammographic examinations required in screening assessment clinics and symptomatic breast clinics. The post is that of a senior grade and so duties will encompass some managerial and supervisory tasks.

Main duties of the job

Report mammography films originating from the breast screening, symptomatic and cancer follow-up programmes.

To liaise with the Office manager with regards to NHSBSP programme planning and moving the mobile unit to different locations within Wiltshire.

To have knowledge and understanding of the statistics and reports required of the department without the expectation of producing such statistics and reports

To assist the Lead Radiographer/ Breast Centre Manager where necessary, particularly in the areas of training, CPD and one to ones with staff and take part after training with the Performance Development Plan

To deputise for the Lead Radiographer and at times for the Breast Centre Manager in their absence ensuring continued effective operation of the Great Western Hospital Foundation Trust Breast Symptomatic Service and the Wiltshire Breast Screening Service

To ensure timely reporting of equipment breakdown and when necessary liaise with equipment service desks, engineers and the medical physics staff ensuring that any breakdown is reported to 

To complete, investigate and report any incidents which require reporting on the Great Western Foundation Trust Datix system.

To assist the Breast Centre Manager with booking and checking staff annual leave and lieu time

To attend meetings such as Staff/Radiographer QA/Clinical Governance meetings, and to deputise for the Breast Centre manager and when necessary chairing these meetings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient Client Care

  • To independently assess each patient.  Perform specialist mammography at the speed and technical skill level demanded by the service, adapting radiographic techniques according to the needs of the patient.
  • To provide an excelled standard of care to women attending for mammography.
  • Be sufficiently informed and professionally competent to identify and address  patients' information needs with respect to breast awareness and other health issues.
  • To carry out discussion with the patients regarding clinical implications and outcomes.  Deal appropriately with complex, sensitive or contentious information on a regular basis.
  • To assist the Radiologist with Ultrasound examinations and to take a lead role in patients care and clinical support during interventional procedures, including image guided biopsies in the assessment and symptomatic clinics.
  • To meet the psychological needs of anxious patients undergoing biopsies and carry out basic nursing procedures to dress puncture sites and give after-care advice.
  • To support patients and relatives who may be in a distressed or anxious state with sensitivity and empathy.

Image Interpretation specific

  • Report mammography films originating from the breast screening, symptomatic and cancer follow-up programmes.
  • To perform both as a first and second reader for the screening service with associated responsibilities.
  • To undertake self-audit and partake in the national audit of film reading accuracy (PERFORMS), undertaking any training recommended to maintain standards.
  • To be a source of information and advice for colleagues with regard to abnormal image recognition.
  • To recommend further specific views or procedures in order to assess abnormal imaging.
  • To participate in multidisciplinary meetings, providing input if appropriate.
  • To attend review meetings and be part of review panel for abnormal screening outcomes.  Use professional knowledge to reach consensus on which women need further assessment.
  • To participate in interval cancer audit.  Review and grade interval cancers providing individual input into consensus of results.
  • To participate in CPD specific for image interpretation in order to maintain and develop skills.  

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council2
  • Certificate in Mammographic practice
  • Degree in Radiography or equivalent Radiographic qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification in breast image interpretation or equivalent, or working towards

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Breast Screening programme and Breast imaging
  • Experience of working with distressed or anxious patients
  • In depth experience of breast imaging
  • Evidence of taking on senior grade responsibilities and responding well in high pressure situations
Desirable criteria
  • Proven management experience and experience in a senior position
