If you like working outdoors; working as part of a small friendly team, read on. Staff love the variety this job offers as the Waste & Grounds Team’s work is managed on a rotational basis. One week you’ll be driving an electric vehicle around the hospital conveying the Clinical Waste, the next managing the recyclable materials in the Waste Transfer Store & loading the outside compactor; then another week, will be collecting Domestic Waste & Recyclables using our second electric vehicle;. There’s a clue in the name Waste & Grounds and you will also have the opportunity to work in the fresh air, helping to maintain the hospital's extensive 22 Hectare site for the enjoyment of Staff, Visitors and Patients alike.
Our rural, elevated site is home to many chalk grassland plants including a variety of orchids, such as pyramidal, common spotted and the rare bee orchid which appear each Spring. We also have wild thyme, marjoram, wild carrot amid a host of wildflowers. The Waste & Grounds Team proudly work to conserve this very special habitat; work which contributed to the hospital winning the 'Successful ways to support biodiversity' New Forest Award in October 2022.
Uniform including safety boots, protective trousers, polo shirts, fleeces & all weather Hi-Viz coat plus personal protective equipment for work outlined are provided to staff free of charge.
The salary advertised is the basic pay which is increased when weekends worked for which you also get worked hours back.
Main duties of the job
Work is managed on a rotational basis and our staff love the variety this brings. One week you will be driving an electric tug transporting & handling the hospital's Domestic Waste, on another week, collecting Clinical Waste; or managing recyclable materials in the Waste Transfer Store & loading the outside compactor. In contrast another week you will be working in the fresh air, undertaking grounds maintenance duties around the hospital's extensive 22 Hectare site.
In outline candidates must possess: -
UK driving license Category B to drive the Electric Vehicles & our Flat Bed Truck
You’ll also need a good level of fitness as the job involves manual handling (with appropriate aids); lots of walking and working with varied machinery & tools. There is a requirement for solo working at weekends (after full induction).
Competency in oral & written English & basic numeracy; together with basic keyboard skills
Knowledge of Health & Safety at Work Act, Manual Handling, COSHH Regulations would be useful; as would any previous experience working in waste management or grounds maintenance & improvement.

Qualification & Skills
Essential criteria
- Work experience in Waste Management or Stores Environment
- Ability to read & write in the English Language
- Basic numeracy skills
- UK Driving Licence (Cat B Manual)
- Physically fit to be able to walk long distances & undertake physically demanding tasks
- Work experience in Grounds or Gardening
Desirable criteria
- Site Knowledge of SDH
- Fork Lifts Truck Operator Licence
- Tug Driving Experience on a large busy site
