Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner

Band 4

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join our operating theatres at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. We are looking for aspiring Operating Department Practitioners to develop through a funded apprenticeship. This course requires no previous care experience as you will be fully supported to complete your induction process, care certificate and gain experience prior to the start of the course.

The Operating Department Practitioner course is a minimum of 3 years of development, through a mixture of work based learning and university study. You will be working in a variety of settings and cover all aspects of work within the operating theatre department and explore the role of the ODP outside of this. These provide further insight into the role and support you in fulfilling the  requirements set by the HCPC.

We are holding a couple of Q&A sessions where you can come along and find out more about the role. There will be a chance to meet some of the team and ask any questions about the role and the recruitment process to join us an apprentice operating department practitioner.

The sessions are on: Monday 10th March 17.00pm – 19.00pm Room C, Education Centre Level 5. Or Monday 17th March 17.00pm – 19.00pm Lecture Theatre, Education Centre Level 5 Salisbury District Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The role is demanding and the right candidate will demonstrate the required maturity, professionalism and dedication to manage the combined requirements of studying whilst working, with the resilience and tenacity to continue at times of pressure.

  • Minimum of Level 3 (NVQ/Diploma/ 2x A-Level qualification) or equivalent, ideally in Health and Social care related subject meeting the university entry requirements.
  • Functional skills at minimum level 2 in Maths and English or GCSE in Maths and English Grade C/4 or above.
  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A-C or 4-9
  • Care Certificate (if currently working in a care environment, or willingness to complete if new to care)
  • Ability and willingness to travel to attend university study and daily commute for placement and work time.
  • Minimum 30 hours contract, must be a substantive post.
  • Meets the ESFA funding requirements in that  non-UK nationals are
eligible for funding if they have been ordinarily resident in the UK  for at least the previous 3 years on the first day of their apprenticeship and have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) or have obtained pre-settled or settled status under EUSS.
