Job overview

Hello my name is Luke, Lead Cancer Nurse at Salisbury.  Our Haematology services are based on the Pembroke Unit at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. Pembroke Unit provides a service for haematology patients undergoing investigations, Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment, stem cell transplantation, palliative care and supportive therapies. The unit comprises the Pembroke Suite (day unit & outpatients) which has 10 treatment spaces and Pembroke Ward, which has 10 beds including 4 side rooms for isolation.  Inpatients on Pembroke Ward will include patients under the care of the Haematologists.  Nursing staff rotate between these two areas, fostering closer working relationships and building on existing skills and knowledge.

The post holder will act as the key worker for haematology patients from investigation to initial diagnosis and throughout the whole cancer journey to ensure coordination and continuity of care.  The post holder will liaise with all members of the multi- disciplinary team, including members of the Primary Health Care Team, to provide specialist nursing knowledge and expertise on all aspects of haematology care. To support the stratified pathway for patients with benign and malignant haematological disease.

Main duties of the job

Your key responsibility is to provide excellent clinical care & holistic support to patients and those affected by cancer at all stages of their cancer pathway from referral through to the process of investigation to treatment and beyond. You will facilitate & co-ordinate care across the wider multi-disciplinary team ensuring clear communication with patients, their relatives & other healthcare professionals.

You will be the person who is an accessible member of the MDT, taking a key role in co-ordinating the patient’s care and promoting continuity, ensuring the patient knows who to access for information and advice.  You be present at diagnosis and for treatment planning, acting as the patients advocate.

In your role you will promote and provide personalised care interventions for patients and those affected by cancer on your caseload.

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered adult nurse with significant, relevant experience at band 5.
  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Demonstrates evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Relevant teaching qualification.
  • Diploma/Degree in relevant area or evidence of study to that level
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration training preferably in cancer/palliative care.
  • Advanced Communication skills training.
  • Psychological Level 2 qualification.
  • Good Clinical Practice
  • Health Couching qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of relevant clinical experience at Band 5 preferably in an Oncology or Haematology.
  • Management experience
  • Experience of multi-professional working.
  • Evidence of well-developed clinical practice within Haematology/Oncology
  • Demonstrates evidence of commitment to professional development.
  • Demonstrates evidence of ability to educate others.
  • Demonstrates ability to use audit to improve quality.
  • Ability to facilitate in group settings with patients or other health professionals.
  • Involvement in developing guidelines/policies/pathways.
  • Experience of appraising junior colleagues.
Desirable criteria
  • Haematology site specific education or module.
  • Working knowledge of primary care, team nursing and reflective practice.
  • Experience of working within a B6 role.
  • Caseload management.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Understand the purpose of HTA & JACIE
  • Thorough up to date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice particularly within the speciality area.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of cancer pathways and targets.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how to apply to self and others
  • Able to prioritise own workload appropriately and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Able to work within the boundaries of the role.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the importance of working within an MDT
  • Demonstrates awareness of research based practice and how to apply it

  • Able to demonstrate a working knowledge of commonly used IT systems.
  • Ability to work autonomously, but also as part of a team.
