Job overview

Do you want to make a difference to the lives of people living with Cancer? We are looking for an enthusiastic, flexible and self motivated person to join our team as a Cancer Rehabilitation Assistant which has been generously funded by the Stars Appeal. You will provide personalised care to patients on our Haematology ward and Oncology patients within the hospital, providing holistic rehabilitation and working in an interdisciplinary manner, using the 'what matters to me' approach.  The role also includes the potential for community visits to patients home so access to a car is essential. You will be well supported by a friendly and forward thinking team. 

The successful applicant will need to have strong organisation skills and be able to adapt to a changing environment. They need experience in healthcare and have excellent communication skills. Support is provided and there will be a robust induction programme. This is a fixed term post for 23 months with potential for permanent funding pending a successful business case.

The role includes the following:

  • Delivery of personalised care and support for those affected by cancer
  • Under direct and indirect supervision of a qualified Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, the post holder will deliver therapy intervention and support for patients admitted to the Haematology ward, and Oncology patients on the general wards. This may include following up specific patients at home once discharged from the hospital. 
  • The interventions could include patient education, advice, exercises, leading on patient activities, undertaking Holistic Needs Assessments as needed and writing/updating the Personalised Care and Support Plans with subsequent signposting. 
  • Working closely with members of the MDT including Cancer Support Workers and Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Foundation Degree or NVQ4/NVQ3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent plus additional training to diploma level equivalent or equivalent through short courses •
  • English and maths skills at QCF level 2 or GCSE Grade C and above
  • Awareness of the process of rehabilitation and the personnel involved.
  • Experience in a relevant clinical area
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to prioritise a variety of patients across a number of work areas.
  • Ability to work under pressure, flexibly & responsibly.lity to make appropriate judgements and participate in clinical decision making.
  • Good communication – verbal and non-verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong working relationships across teams and staff groups
  • Demonstrates empathy and sensitivity
  • Ability to use own initiative and problem solve
  • Ability to undertake basic administrative tasks such as photocopying and answering the telephone.
