Job overview

Would you like to be part of an award-winning NHS Trust located on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales? Then we have a fantastic opportunity for you to join our nationally recognised Urology Team.

We are looking for a substantive Consultant in Urology to join us within the Surgical Directorate at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust.

The Trust and NHS is facing a time of transformation, challenge and opportunity. The Urology team is developing its service as part of the lighthouse project, introducing new treatments for BHP and is looking to further develop its urology investigations unit.  We need a Consultant Urologist with vision and leadership skills to join our current team of enthusiastic surgeons to strengthen our team for the future.

Main duties of the job

  • To deliver a high-quality Urology service to our local population.
  •  Maintain the provision of elective and emergency Urology care as part of the Urology team and provide comprehensive management for Urology patients.
  • Possess experience and skills across a range of Urological techniques and be competent with the following procedures including, but not
    limited to:
    o Basic Endoscopy skills
    o TUR Prostate
    o TUR Bladder
    o Basic diagnostic work up and therapeutic interventions for common conditions
    o Emergency Bladder management
    o Endoscopic treatment of urinary tract stones
    o Sepsis management
    o Child and Young Adult Acute Scrotal Pain
  • Participate regularly in clinical governance activities, teaching and in the cancer unit peer review process
  • Participate in our objective achieving the local and national access waiting time targets including referral to treatment (RTT)
  • Comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor & Good Medical Practice

Working for our organisation

The post will be based at Airedale Hospital. Airedale NHS Foundation Trust serves a population which extends over a wide and diverse geographical and demographic area, from the Yorkshire Dales, to the small market town of Skipton, Ilkley, and urban Keighley. The hospital lies between Keighley and Skipton, only 10 miles from the multicultural city of Bradford and within an hour from Leeds.

Airedale is a national leader in the development and provision of Telemedicine and will benefit from a new hospital build due for completion by 2030.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Full GMC Registration
  • • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) / CESR / European Community Rights
  • • An appropriate higher “Urology” surgical qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Sufficient experience to provide Acute and Elective Urology services at Consultant Level across a range of Urological techniques
  • • Experience / knowledge relevant to local and national access waiting time targets including Cancer Waiting Time (CWT) Targets and Referral To Treatment (RTT) Targets

Teaching Slills

Essential criteria
  • • Good communication skills
  • • Evidence of participation in, and demonstrable commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Trust.
  • • Ability to contribute to teaching
Desirable criteria
  • • Distance learning or other modern learning methods
  • • Attendance at “training for teaching” course.
  • • Attendance at “assessment and appraisal” course.
  • • Demonstration of Interest in Educational methods (Cert.Ed., etc)

Academic Achievements / Research

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to perform critical literature appraisal
  • • Evidence of recent and current research.
  • • Demonstrable knowledge of the up-to-date literature
Desirable criteria
  • • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Clinical Governance / Audit

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
  • • Ability to undertake audit and implement key actions
