Job overview
The Elective Care IST is a small expert team of senior healthcare managers who support NHS systems and organisations to respond to the challenges faced with recovering elective services and more traditionally, focussing on waiting times for patients. An exciting opportunity has arisen for exceptional individuals to join the team providing high quality on-site and remote improvement support to regions, STPs / ICSs and Trusts across the country.
Main duties of the job
This is a demanding and varied role which requires you to:
- Be a recognised expert in cancer and / or RTT and / or diagnostics
- Have significant recent senior (at least 3 to 5 years deputy / associate director or general manager) NHS management experience of operationally delivering elective care waiting time standards (cancer and / or RTT and / or diagnostics)
- Have experience of and be operationally credible when working at a senior level to identify improvement priorities,
- Support the development and implementation of recovery and improvement plans with a wide range of clinical and non-clinical staff to deliver improved elective pathways and waiting times for patients.
- Have significant expertise in improvement science, pathway transformation, performance delivery and collaborative consultancy.
Working alongside other Improvement Managers / Senior Improvement Managers and regional team colleagues you will provide expert guidance and direct support ensuring health systems make tangible improvements in elective care that deliver benefits for patients.
The post holder will be required to undertake extensive travel across England including regular nights away from home.
Various base locations are available and will be agreed with the successful candidates

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
NHS England hold a Sponsor Licence; this means that we may be able to sponsor you providing the Home Office requirements are met. To be eligible for sponsorship through the Skilled Worker route you’ll usually need to be paid the ‘standard’ salary rate of at least £38,700 per year, or the ‘going rate’ for your job, whichever is higher. Education, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Educated in or significant experience of improvement methodology and/or programme management and patient flow, ideally in an NHS setting
- Specific experience of operationally-managing (at a senior level) a significant range of services in an NHS setting.
- Experience of designing and delivering change in operational services at a senior management or professional level
- Has up-to-date knowledge of major research findings and current issues in elective.
- Educated to Masters level or equivalent level or equivalent experience of working at a senior level in specialist area relevant to elective care including cancer and diagnostics
Skills and capabilities
Essential criteria
- Expert negotiator, facilitator and mediator, with experience of applying these skills with senior/executive audiences
- Able to produce high quality reports in excellent, grammatical English and of high readability
- Ability to think strategically and analyse complex problems and interact in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment.
- High level analytical skills and the ability to draw qualitative and quantitative data from a wide range of sources and present in a clear concise manner
