Job overview
Specialist Physiotherapist Band 6 - This is an inpatient post and for a suitable candidate we would consider a development post from band 5 to 6.
To provide assessment, intervention, advice, support, education, training and information to service user, carers, other professionals and any other person involved in the care of the individual in respect of physiotherapy and the care of older people with specialist mental health needs including dementia, depression, anxiety, psychosis, bipolar spectrum disorder etc.
Through the delivery of physiotherapy support older adults needs are met within the OPMH service, promoting optimal physical and mental well-being, functional capability and quality of life
To use evidence based / service user centered principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate physiotherapy interventions delivered in secondary mental health in-patient and community care settings
To participate actively in multi-disciplinary and multi-agency methods of working within the Trust’s Older Peoples’ Mental Health Service and across the heath and care system
To develop physiotherapy clinical practice within Older People’s Mental Health Service. To actively contribute to the development of the physiotherapy service and the older people’s mental health care pathway through debate, meetings etc.

Main duties of the job
· To participate in the planning and delivery of the physiotherapy service across the care group, prioritising clinical need to provide an effective service.
· Assess, plan and implement comprehensive physiotherapy treatment programmes for service users, and evaluate the outcome, whilst ensuring that a high standard of professional practice is maintained and further developed.
· To manage a caseload of service users presenting with complex mental and physical health needs, frailty, multimorbidity, challenging behavior,
· communication difficulties and other associated conditions
· Use a range of verbal and nonverbal communication tools to communicate effectively with service users to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes
· Use interpreters where appropriate for the local population.
· Assess service user understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with service users who lack capacity to consent to treatment in line with the Mental Capacity Act (2005)

- Degree/Diploma Physiotherapy
- Registered to work within the UK
- Health Professions Council registration
Training
Essential criteria
- Moving and Handling Regulations and their practical application in clinical practice.
- Evidence of attending post graduate CPD courses.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Post graduate experience.
- Participated in audit and /or research
- Demonstrate clinical experience in either Mental Health or older peoples settings
- Participated in the supervision of junior staff and physiotherapy students on clinical placement
Desirable criteria
- Experience working in the NHS
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Audit and Evaluation
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Relevance of recent government publications, eg Disability Discrimination Act.
- Community care legislation and the role and responsibility of the different agencies.
- Up to date treatment techniques
- A clear understanding of the needs of service users with complex physical needs
