Job overview

Reporting directly to the regional Chief Operating Officer the Director of Planned Care and Improvement oversees the delivery of the NHS’ ambitious commitment to continue the transformation of planned care services (including Cancer and Diagnostics) and delivery of national standards for planned care. They will oversee the expansion of current efficiency, productivity and transformation work to drive the relevant programmes to ensure patients get the right care, in the right place, at the right time, thereby improving access, waiting times, clinical outcomes and experience for all patients in need of planned care in NHS provider settings.

 

Main duties of the job

The Director of Planned Care and Improvement oversee all aspects of planned care delivery, performance and transformation at a regional level and supports the development of our strategy for planned care and the delivery of improved performance, efficiency and productivity. This will draw upon existing work already undertaken with a particular focus on addressing unwarranted variation and assuring good practice is being introduced. They are the professional lead for improvement across the region and SRO for NHS IMPACT. They will deputise for the Regional Chief Operating Officer as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be the regional SRO for Planned Care and NHS Impact and the Regional Professional Lead for Improvement.

 

Lead delivery and development of the National Elective Recovery Plan and Regional Elective Care Strategy.

 

Develop the region’s approach to monitoring and driving continuous improvement in planned care performance across services working with analytical teams to develop clear and consistent performance metrics for assessing delivery within services and act as an interface for teams responsible for planned care.

To provide the Director leadership for the Elective Care, Diagnostics and Cancer Programmes within the region supporting delivery of the programmes and the development and improvement of performance across these functions.

Interface with the Cancer Alliances within the region who take primary responsibility for delivery of cancer improvement and transformation.

The post holder will report to the Regional Chief Operating Officer (COO) as part of their Leadership Team.

 

The post holder will work closely with directors across the regional team as well as with each ICB.

Essential criteria
  • Significant management experience at senior/Board or equivalent level.
  • Significant experience and understanding of large and complex operational NHS organisations and how to achieve change within them.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience within a variety of health care settings, including experience in the acute sector.
  • Significant experience of working with multiple NHS organisations with sometimes opposing objectives to gain consensus and drive change.
  • Significant experience in senior programme management and structuring the delivery of complex work, incorporating multiple inputs and stakeholders, management of fluctuating workload and associated resource management.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable evidence of expert understanding of the national strategy for planned care services (including diagnostics and cancer).
  • Demonstrable evidence of expert understanding of NHS Impact and Continuous Quality Improvement.
