Locum Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Locum Consultant

Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant post in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.  This is a fixed term locum post to cover a career break with potential of extension as well as leading to a future substantive post.

With an increased requirement for consultant oversight for maternity risk assessment and acute care, the department has made significant improvements in its approach to high risk Obstetrics and perinatal feto-maternal health.

The department is equally interested in enhancing upskilling and improving subspecialist gynaecology services including ambulatory gynaecology, subfertility, menopause, adolescent gynaecology, urogynaecology to mention a few.

The successful applicant will join a friendly, motivated and dynamic department. The post has a Obstetric clinical workload but equaly includes regular sessions in outpatients and elective theatres.   The post will have job planned time set out to focus on perinatal high risk care.  Other specialist interest areas within Gynaecology may also be accommodated within the job plan (Ambulatory Gynaecology, fertility, menopause care and adolescent gynaecology care).

In addition to regular daytime sessions, Consultants in the department work flexible clinical sessions to prospectively cover theatre sessions and clinics. The job plan will include a mix of fixed and flexible sessions.

Main duties of the job

Applications will be welcomed from all suitably qualified Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. Experience in Obstetrics and labour ward care is essential.

There will be an on call commitment with this post which will include cover for both Obstetrics and for acute Gynaecology. You will join the existing on call consultants on a 1:17 rota for labour ward cover. The appointment will allow us to maintain our capacity to deliver 98 hours of consultant labour ward cover per week. The consultant presence on labour ward is delivered throughout the week, with a consultant resident on site between 08:00-22:00 each day. The on call consultant provides the consultant labour ward cover from 1700-2200.  After 22:00, on call consultant cover is delivered on a non-resident basis. The post includes Gynaecology on call which is non-resident.

The women’s journey work stream of the OMS (Outstanding Maternity Services transformation project) recognised the need for consultant input for those women with risk factors. Consultant oversight is required to meet the standards set out by the Ockenden report; the saving babies’ lives care bundle as well as the department priority to reduce perinatal morbidity and mortality for our high risk population. We are looking for individuals who have the experience and expertise to develop new services including a rainbow clinic, postnatal care clinic and one stop fetal wellbeing clinic.
