Locum Consultant in Palliative Care (fixed term)

We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced individual to join the well established, consultant led specialist palliative care services in Bradford. The individual will lead the existing service and be integral to its expansion in accepting referrals from primary care. Marie Curie REACT identifies, reviews and manages patients with acute palliative care needs through a presence in the Emergency Department and an acute palliative medicine virtual ward in the community. The post is funded until 31st May 2025. We are actively seeking permanent funding for the project.

The post holder will join the five consultants currently working in the hospital, community and hospice. The 3 specialist palliative care services in Bradford work closely together to deliver high quality, integrated palliative care to a culturally and ethnically diverse population. There are strong links with the Yorkshire palliative medicine training scheme and the local GP training scheme.
- Acting as medical director of the hospice
- The medical care of all inpatients
- Medical input to the day therapy unit and outpatient clinics
- Clinical admission policies in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team
- Contributing to and developing the existing clinical governance programme
- Liaison with hospital services and primary care teams as appropriate
- Supervision, training and appraisal of junior medical staff
- Arranging the on-call duties
- Input to educational activities
- Contributing to local and national strategic planning within Marie Curie

The consultants clinically based at the Marie Curie Hospice are responsible for:
- Acting as medical director of the hospice

Additional nonclinical responsibilities such as strategic planning, training of junior staff, acting as hospice Medical Director and clinical governance are divided by negotiation amongst the consultants. It is not anticipated that this postholder would be required to act as Medical Director during this contract.

Qualifications

- MBChB or equivalent
- MRCP or FRCS of equivalent to specialty (UK) or equivalent
- Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) or equivalent
- CCT or within 6 months of CCT date
- On Specialist Register with GMC and continue to hold a licence to practice
Experience

- Evidence of completing an approved period of training in Palliative Medicine

- Established consultant practice with evidence of service development
- Evidence of working within the interface between acute and community services
