Job overview

As Training Programme Director, you will be responsible for coordinating the training across the region.  You will ensure that national standards, determined by Royal Colleges, the GMC and NHS-E WT&E are implemented locally.  Applicants must be currently working within the West Midlands area at consultant level or equivalent including SAS doctors in the specialty school area.  Experience within the specialty at consultant or SAS doctor level is essential as is considerable experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context. 

The post attracts 1 PA which will be reimbursed to the successful candidate’s employing Trust at £10,000 (pro rata.)

It is expected that Training Programme Directors continue in clinical practice while fulfilling the role. The post will be offered for 3 years in the first instance with satisfactory annual appraisal, with the option of extending for a further 3 years if mutually agreed.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Head of School, Postgraduate Dean and the Future Workforce Team to produce doctors who will strive for the highest standards of patient- centered care and commit themselves to a lifetime of professional development.

NHS England Midlands is responsible for the delivery of high quality postgraduate medical and dental education and training across the region and is committed to the development of a medical and dental workforce that will support high quality patient care.

You will work with the Head of School to produce doctors who will strive for the highest standards of patient-centred care and commit themselves to a lifetime of professional development.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Primary clinical healthcare qualification.
  • Currently working at consultant level or equivalent in the specialty school area
  • Experience within the specialty at Consultant level.
  • Membership/Fellowship of a College, Faculty, professional association and be registered with the regulatory body.
  • Must hold a current Licence to Practise
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development (example: educator courses, Train the trainer, etc)

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Current clinical commitment in the School/specialty.
  • Considerable experience of working with learners or doctors in training in an educational context.
  • Experience of clinical and educational leadership and innovation, including managing a multi-professional team.
  • Demonstrable track record of delivery in service and education.
  • Trained and experienced in recruitment, selection and Equality and Diversity in the last 3 years
  • Active involvement in, and up to date with, appraisal processes.
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of developments involving the relevant Colleges/Faculties, professional bodies, related NHS organisations and regulatory bodies.
  • Understanding of the workforce transformation agenda.
  • Knowledge of the NHS, its structures and processes, including an understanding of healthcare/multi-professional workforce matters.
