We are recruiting a full time Consultant Paediatrician to be based at Worthing Hospital. As a General Paediatric Consultant the candidate will be responsible for delivering high quality paediatric care to neonates, children, and young people within the outpatient and inpatient settings in the Worthing area. Candidates with specialist interests complimentary to those of the team are encouraged.

Potential candidates should be keen to drive forward standards & work with a motivated multidisciplinary team including consultants, junior doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, dieticians and other members of tertiary specialist services either within the Trust or from Tertiary referral centres.
As a Resident on-call Consultant, candidates will have the opportunity to maintain their practical skills during tier 2 resident working periods, and also have the opportunity to exercise leadership & supervisor skills during more traditional consultant attending and on-call out of hours working.

Main duties of the job
This General Paediatric with neonates role will be based on 10 PAs to include 8.5 DCC PAs & 1.5 SPA & will allow for flexible working & time shifting. This may be worked flexibly over a seven-day working week.
The consultant will undertake weekly outpatient general paediatric clinics, & participation in the Consultant of the week rota 1:10
This post includes resident on-call duties for weekend day shifts (three weekends per year) & weekday night shifts (26 nights per year) to cover the tier 2 on-call rota. Skills required will be Neonatal life support skills as well as paediatric life support skills, clinical paediatric practical skills expected of a general paediatric Tier 2 doctor, & managing the team of junior doctors on the shift with appropriate teamworking.
Outpatient department sessions give any successful candidate the opportunity to see new & follow-up general paediatric patients in an outpatient setting locally. Candidates with appropriate sub speciality interests will be supported to develop their skills & undertake specialist clinics.
During consultant of the week attending sessions & tier 3 on-call sessions, the candidate will have the opportunity to manage the acute general paediatric & level 1 neonatal wards, utilising an MDT of nurses, doctors, physios & dieticians. There will be opportunities to develop management & leadership qualities during these sessions, as well as an opportunity to carry out bedside teaching to our enthusiastic junior doctors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Consultant of the week attending session. Monday to Friday 9-5pm.
• Lead Ward rounds on general paediatric wards daily, and Neonatal wards when the need arises.
• Respond to neonatal and paediatric emergency calls with the resus team, with expectation to take a lead role within the team.
• Be responsible for the management of new patients admitted to the wards or treated on the CYPDU(children and young person day unit) during attending weeks, as well as being responsible for follow up plans and clinics for those same patients.
Resident on-call sessions: Weekends 9am to 9.30pm, Weekday nights 9pm-9.30am
• Respond to neonatal and paediatric emergency calls with the resus team, with expectation to take a lead role within team.
• Manage the acute admissions overnight with the help of the Tier 1 junior doctor and nursing staff. To communicate when appropriate to the Tier 3 consultant on call from home, who has overall responsibility for the patients admitted overnight.
• To support and teach the junior doctors and nurses within your team, using beside teaching and procedure supervision.
Non-resident on-call weekdays 5pm to 9am, weekends 48hrs Saturday to Monday 9am-9am
• Carry out ward rounds on weekends followed by non-resident on-call from home.
• To be available to attend from home for clinical reasons, and to be contacted over the phone for clinical and operational advice.
• To provide support and guidance to the resident paediatric junior doctors and nurses

Experience & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Basic medical degree
- • MRCPCH or appropriate specialist qualification
- • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
- • CCT in Paediatrics or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
- • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC

- • Higher degree eg MSc
