Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist to play a key role in a new development within the Forensic Outreach and Liaison Service (FOLS). Due to securing additional funding, Forensic Outreach and Liaison Service (FOLS) is currently expanding to provide specialist support to Service Users with Learning Disability and/or neurodevelopmental needs who have offending histories or present a risk to others.

The post holder will provide Consultant input to Forensic Outreach and Liaison Service (FOLS) across Sussex

Main duties of the job

·         To liaise with statutory and non-statutory (Probation, Police, Court, Social Services, voluntary organisations/agencies) to assist in the management of mentally disordered offenders (approximately 3-4 referrals pa)

·         To act as an Approved/Responsible Clinician for patients' subject to the mental health act and on caseload and to carry out MHA assessments as required.

·         To assess the patients who are presently in low security with regard to their suitability for community placement and community risk management.

·         To manage a case-load of approximately 30-40 pro-rata community patients, some of which are conditionally discharged restricted patients. The Forensic service manages all conditionally discharged S41 patient.

·         To participate in the weekly referrals meeting

·         To offer training to professional audiences as appropriate

·         To participate in the Consultant on-call rota in relevant geographical area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

It is envisaged that the post holder would have a caseload of approximately 30-40 pro-rate community patients 

·         To provide a regular liaison service to adult psychiatric services in the catchment area regarding risk management (approximately two referrals per week)

·         To provide occasional assessments of prisoners thought not to require hospital admission whose home area is within the catchment area

·         To liaise with statutory and non-statutory (Probation, Police, Court, Social Services, voluntary organisations/agencies) to assist in the management of mentally disordered offenders (approximately 3-4 referrals pa)

·         To act as an Approved/Responsible Clinician for patients subject to the mental health act and on caseload and to carry out MHA assessments as required.

·         To assess the patients who are presently in low security with regard to their suitability for community placement and community risk management.

·         To manage a case-load of approximately 30-40 community patients (pro-rata), some of which are conditionally discharged restricted patients. The Forensic service manages all conditionally discharged S41 patient.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

  • Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training
  • Ability to work in and lead team

  • Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
  • Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken
  • Experienced in clinical research and / or service evaluation
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
  • Has led clinical audits leading to service change or improved outcomes to patients
