Practitioner Psychologist (Full time, band 8a or band 7 preceptorship to b8a) in the Dementia Assessment Service (DAS)
and Dementia and Older People's Mental Health Service (DOPMHs), Chichester, West Sussex

We are very excited to be advertising this new full-time Band 8a Psychology Practitioner post working with people with dementia and older people with mental health problems in Chichester, Midhurst and Bognor. This post will also be open to those interested in a band 7 preceptorship, where there will be a clear development plan to progress to a band 8a Practitioner Psychologist post in the same service. The post would be suitable for an HCPC registered Psychology Practitioner with post qualification experience, applications from trainee psychologists who are due to qualify in Sept 2024 would also be very welcome.

The post will be primarily based in our Dementia Assessment Service providing therapeutic interventions following diagnosis to both individuals and their families. There will also be opportunities to complete neuropsychological assessment to aid diagnosis within the DAS team. For part of the week the postholder will additionally  work in or DOPMH team providing assessment and intervention to people with dementia and their families presenting with more complexity and for people over 70 with other mental health issues. You will be part of highly-skilled and supportive multi-disciplinary teams based in Chichester.

You would be working alongside other Practitioner Psychologists, Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner and trainee Clinical Psychologists. The post-holder will ideally be familiar with working in an NHS setting. We would welcome applicants able to provide both direct and indirect psychological work, preferably with experience of team consultant/formulation and working in care home settings. Knowledge and skills in neuropsychology would be welcome but not essential.

The post holder will be expected to travel across the geographical area covered by the team. There is a lot of variety in the role as part of the post sits in the Community mental health team (DOPMH) and part in the Dementia Assessment Service (DAS). We are keen to discuss with applicants how we can use their interests and experience to develop the role.

We would also be happy to consider candidates interested in working across teams/ specialties in a split post e.g. DOPMH and Working age adult posts or split with acute services. We can be flexible in developing these opportunities and would welcome informal discussions.

community of psychologists in West Sussex SOAMHS services across our community and acute teams. In West Sussex Psychology services, we are very keen to offer development opportunities to our newly qualified staff. You will receive regular clinical supervision from an experienced clinical psychologist and DOPMH specialist as well as a commitment to your own continuing professional development.

Our Trust has an exciting range of CPD opportunities and the post-holder will be encouraged to develop special interests and expertise in line with service and team objectives. We have set up a newly qualified peer support group and the Trust is focused on developing staff wellbeing initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology [or its equivalent for those trained before 1996 or outside the UK*] as approved by the HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • For forensic psychologists working in forensic settings: Masters degree (with the award of the British Psychological Society qualification in forensic psychology or equivalent)
  • Professionally registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health Professions Council (HCPC).

Knowledge/Experience

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Demonstrate specialist experience gained postqualification of working as an applied psychologist with evidence of having received a substantial amount of clinical supervision (normally in the region of approximately 50 hours).
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience of the application of applied psychology in different cultural contexts and experience of working within a multicultural framework.
  • Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care
  • Experience or demonstrable knowledge of working with the particular client group served by the team/service
  • Knowledge of guidance and legislation in relation to the client group and mental health
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional disabilities etc).
  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies
  • High level of knowledge and skills in neuropsychology and evidence of further practice and/or training since qualification.
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the HCPC.
