Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a  Substantive Consultant Respiratory Physician to join the team at UHSussex on the Royal Sussex County Hospital site. 


We welcome subspecialist interests relevant to your experience, however experience within the lung cancer service would be advantageous. This is a full time post but we would encourage applications from those who wish to work flexibly. 


The Respiratory department consists of 11 Respiratory Physicians across both our acute sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and Princess Royal Hospital, Hayward’s Heath. We have 10 specialist nurses in COPD, asthma, allergy, TB, respiratory infection, NIV, sleep, respiratory virtual ward and ILD. We have developed and run a respiratory 
virtual ward focussing on admission avoidance and early supported discharge and are in the early stages of developing a respiratory same day emergency care (SDEC) service.


There are sub-specialist clinics in asthma, allergy, COPD, TB, fungal disease and non-CF bronchiectasis, lung cancer, pleural disease, interstitial lung disease and non-invasive ventilation. We perform weekly EBUS and bronchoscopy lists and twice weekly pleural 
lists.

Main duties of the job

10 PA: 8x DCC, 2x SPA. Inpatient and outpatient respiratory care; contribution towards respiratory out of hours on-call and weekend rota (1:10). Procedural competence including pleural, bronchoscopy and/or endobronchial ultrasound advantageous dependent on experience and sub-specialist expertise. Participation in clinical supervision for doctors in training. Involvement in teaching medical students from Brighton and Sussex Medical School.


This is a full-time post, however part-time and job-share applications are welcome.

Experience Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
  • • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • • CCT in Respiratory Medicine or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
Desirable criteria
  • • Higher Degree
  • • Qualification in Higher Education (certificate, diploma, masters)

Clinical Skills & Experience
