Job overview

Applications are sought for a 10 PA substantive Consultant post in Renal Medicine. They would join the 12 enthusiastic and committed Renal Consultants in the department and multi-professional team.  

The successful applicant will be based at the Sussex Kidney Unit (SKU) in the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton, which is part of University Hospitals Sussex, and is the teaching hospital associated with Brighton and Sussex Medical School.   


The successful applicant will do general nephrology/ advanced kidney care clinics in Brighton, as well as an acute new patient clinic. They will also form part of the renal consultant team who do outreach general nephrology clinics in the Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit seeing new and follow up patients.


The successful applicant will be responsible for around 50 haemodialysis patients in the Polegate/Eastbourne Unit and for a native and transplant Renal biopsy procedure list at RSCH.  There is no general medical component to this job and the applicant will be involved in the renal on-call rota at the RSCH on a 1:9-11 basis.   

Main duties of the job

SKU has a large number of home dialysis patients as well as around 500 transplant patients and 540 haemodialysis patients. Haemodialysis takes place at the main unit at SKU and in satellite units at Bexhill, Eastbourne and Worthing. 

There are some clinics held offsite at the satellite units which the post holder will be expected to attend and assistance with transport can be provided. 

There are ample opportunities for audit and quality improvement projects in our well-established audit programme. There is also the time and resources for extensive study leave opportunities and this is encouraged in all registrars. 

There are also research activities which the post holder could become involved with both NIHR portfolio studies and independent projects with a good track record of trainees presenting their work at national and international meetings.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
  • • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • • CCT in Renal or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
