Consultant Interventional Radiologist

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

We are looking for two outstanding clinicians wishing to actively develop Interventional Radiology at a Level 1 trauma hospital, support the centralisation of regional vascular services, and contribute to the expanding non-vascular IR workload in the spoke hospital, including hepatobiliary and oncology intervention.

There are many opportunities provided by working University Hospitals Sussex with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, teaching and research, and high quality patient experience. A completely new hospital, including new state of the art IR department has opened in 2023, as part of the 3T development (Teaching, Tertiary services and Trauma). We have close working relationships with our referring colleagues to make a strong, growing, ambitious unit.

Successful applicants will contribute to a 1:9 regional IR on call rota and experience in embolisation techniques are essential. Demonstration of comprehensive IR training and experience will be expected. EVAR training can be provided on the job if required. Additional sub-speciality interests will be considered.
Sussex is also a great location to live near to the London Gatwick airport, seaside and South Downs and also has excellent schools nearby. It is also commuting distance to London.

Main duties of the job

The new consultant will be expected to provide specialist interventional radiology services to the Trust. The appointment is to cope with the increase in interventional workload generally within the local health economy, but particularly to contribute to the development of Brighton as the major regional vascular and trauma centre, and contribute to a comprehensive 24/7 interventional radiology on-call rota. There is a separate general radiology consultant on-call for diagnostic imaging, in addition to separate neuro and paediatric rotas. The Sectra PACS system allows remote reporting from home for the discussion of IR cases.

The on-call will be supported by a full interventional radiology nurse and radiographer rota. There are currently 10 IR nurses with further posts out to advert. The post holders will be integrated into the clinical activities of the general imaging department with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care in addition to contributing to all service developments, teaching and research. They will work and liaise with existing consultants to provide and develop imaging services. The candidates will need to cover all imaging modalities and contribute to the general radiology workload.

All on-call and emergency duties will be from the hub site in Brighton.
