Job overview

We're looking for a Systemic/Family Psychotherapist to join our friendly, highly-skilled and enthusiastic community of psychologists and psychological therapists in the Brighton & Hove Assessment & Treatment Service. 

This is a permanent Band 8a post (WTE 0.5; 18.75 Hours per week, with options for flexible working) where you will be working with adults with complex mental health problems, their families and carers. 

You must be registered as a Systemic/Family Psychotherapist with the UKCP.    

We are keen to support your professional development and will support you to undertake additional specialist training relevant to the post, plus the regular CPD opportunities for the psychological professions available in the Trust.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of the Brighton and Hove Assessment & Treatment Service (ATS), which provides community mental health services for adults of all ages. The service is multi-professional and based across two hubs; East Brighton Community Mental Health Centre and Mill View Hospital.  This post will be based within our East Brighton hub, but clinical work will cover both hubs. The ATS places a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary team working and close working relationships with other local mental health services and community organisations. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic systemic/family psychotherapist to support and develop our existing systemic work, which includes a well-established Family Therapy Clinic with a multidisciplinary reflecting team, and a network of Family Interventions for Psychosis/Bipolar Disorder (FIp) practitioners. The role will support systemic/family work across all care pathways, will offer systemic assessments and interventions and will support systemic skills and family inclusive practice in the teams. There will also be a supervisory role in the Family Therapy Clinic and for FIp practitioners and other systemic practitioners working in adult services in Brighton. 

You will be joining a group of psychological practitioners who embrace systemic ideas. There will be a view to develop your supervision and leadership skills in this area.

REQUIREMENTS

In order to be a successful Systemic Psychotherapist in our team, you will have:

  • Recognised accredited post graduate level training in family & systemic psychotherapy
  • Professional registration as a Systemic Psychotherapist with the UKCP
  • Experience of providing a systemic psychotherapy service to adult clients and their families/networks, or enthusiasm for developing these skills, and experience of providing systemic supervision to practitioners offering systemic interventions

The psychological professions workforce in ATS has expertise in a wide range of therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Analytic Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Mentalisation Based Therapy, EMDR and systemic family therapy.

  • Recognised accredited post graduate level training in family & systemic psychotherapy, as specified in the relevant Appendix

Knowledge

  • Substantial post-qualification/accreditation experience of systemic psychotherapy (assessment, formulation and treatment), as specified in the Appendix, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • A high level of competence in applying a psychological therapy to complex difficulties appropriate for this therapy with the client group served by the post, and a proven track record of delivering positive outcomes in this therapy
  • Experience of offering teaching, training and supervision within a demanding organisational context.
  • Experience of representing psychological therapy within the context of multi-disciplinary care within a complex organisational context.
  • Significant experience of working with the particular client group served by the team/service
  • Knowledge of guidance and legislation in relation to the client group.
  • A high level specialist knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist systemic psychotherapy therapy as specified in the appendix, as applied to the client group using this service.
  • Experience of the application of systemic psychotherapy in different cultural contexts and experience of working within a multicultural framework.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as required by the professional registration/accrediting body specified in the appendix.
