We are looking to recruit a new Deputy Chief Nurse due to promotion to Chief Nurse of the current post holder. We wish him very well in leading his new organisation and we look forward to welcoming you to this position.

This is a great opportunity to work with a very experienced CNO who is also the Deputy Chief Executive and prepare yourself for your first Board role.  The Deputy Chief Nurse will deputise across the full range of duties for the Chief Nursing Officer/Executive Director.  Holding the full delegated authority of the Chief Nursing Officer/ Executive Director across the entire range of the Corporate Nursing, Safeguarding portfolio. This includes making strategic decisions which impact on the quality and safety of services, including safe staffing levels, infection control outbreaks and service closures.   Managing the Corporate Nursing Team, Safeguarding and Team in the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer/ Executive Director.  Deputising at local, regional and national meetings as requested ensuring the organisation and profession is represented operationally and strategically. Deputising at Executive Committee and Board meetings as required, developing and presenting papers, ensuring that nursing issues and local and national issues that impact on the organisation are raised and addressed. Making decisions in such meetings on behalf of the Chief Nursing Officer/Executive Director.

 

Main duties of the job

Provide strong leadership and strategic direction for nursing practice, develop and implement clinical policies, and ensure evidence-based practice across the Trust. Lead nursing performance measures and outcomes, develop and evaluate the Trust Nursing Strategy, and support modernising nursing careers. Ensure compliance with NMC standards, offer professional advice, and manage Corporate Nursing Teams. Represent nursing in governance forums, ensure safe patient care, and foster partnerships within the care system. Contribute to the Trusts Clinical Strategy and participate in quality assurance processes.  Please also see Job Description.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role involves providing professional and clinical advice to colleagues on clinical and managerial matters, leading nursing employees, representing nursing in various forums, and resolving issues. It includes ensuring safe patient care, participating in nursing-related issues, fostering partnerships within the integrated care system, implementing aspects of the Trust's Clinical Strategy, and participating in quality assurance processes. The role also involves developing policies, ensuring compliance with standards, managing budgets, and providing leadership to maximize user and carer experiences. Person specification

Criteria -

Essential criteria
  • RMN/RNLD
  • Extensive experience as a Senior Nurse capacity – Working in MH / LD or a regulator – over 10 years in senior position
  • Masters in a clinically or leadership relevant qualification related to MH/ LD
  • Ability to work on site a minimum of 2 days per week and act as Director on call – monthly rota
Desirable criteria
  • Project Management and Quality Improvement Training
  • Experience of effective redesign and improvement methodologies
  • Senior Commissioning & SLA negotiation experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Substantial experience in management or a senior clinical role
  • In a nursing leadership role or clinical expert role
  • Extensive knowledge and expertise across a number of areas eg clinical, HR, finance
  • Experience at a senior level of managing healthcare systems
  • Experience of concurrently managing a wide variety of projects
  • Experience of effective redesign and improvement methodologies
  • Experience of working in partnership with the public and independent sector
  • Relationship between the managed NHS, Independent Sector Providers and external stakeholders
  • Significant experience of engaging clinicians in service redesign, demand management and care pathways
  • Significant professional leadership, especially professional development, clinical governance and supervision
  • Senior Commissioning & SLA negotiation experience
