Probationary Period

All new staff to the Trust will be subject to a standard 6 month probationary period, the details of which will duly follow in your contract of employment.

Job overview

The clinical lead nurse for oncology will provide clinical expertise in the management of oncology patients that are on SACT treatment including oversite of treatment related toxicities. The lead nurse will have a strategic input to the oncology speciality acting as a deputy to the nurse consultant. The lead will act as a role model ensuring clinical excellence and leadership skills. This role will additionally involve line management for  the band 7 specialist practitioners in the service.

The post holder will display a high profile, accessible and be responsive as a clinical leader with managerial and clinical responsibility for nursing and health care within the  oncology speciality throughout South Warwickshire Foundation Trust (SWFT).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

He/she will display excellent leadership skills, ensuring that the
service delivers high quality patient experience, care and outcomes. The post holder will be able to make informed decisions within the speciality and scope of professional practice, involving the patients and public to ensure agreed standards, targets and objectives are achieved. To work in collaboration with the General Manager/Service Manager, Consultants, AHPs and Nursing team to ensure that all aspects of the oncology service, the national and local operational and quality targets are met and ensure best practice is achieved, eg waiting times.

The post holder will have full clinical responsibility for the overall Day units nursing team within oncology with direct line management of the unit manager and nurse practitioners. The individual will provide clinical and professional leadership for nurses and Health Care Support workers, Bands 1-4. This will involve ensuring safe nurse staffing by appropriate deployment, delegation, co-ordination and supervision of grades of staff in his/her charge. This responsibility includes ensuring all staff work within the competencies appropriate to their professional qualifications and grading. The post holder will provide an environment conducive
to the needs of all permanent nursing and care members of staff, meeting their learning and developmental requirements. The post holder will also hold overall responsibility for managing the electronic staff rota in order to maximise staffing efficiency and minimise the requirement for bank
and agency staff, however the unit manager will be managing the rota on a day to day basis.

Clinical/Managerial

  1. Clinical line management to include the unit manager and nurse practitioners and to liaise with patient liaison services, divisional managers, other lead nurses and matrons, to ensure a high standard of service delivery

2.    Maintain effective relationships with the multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) to ensure continuity of patient care.

3.    Ensures that the duty rota reflects the workload in the department, allocating leave appropriately to ensure service delivery is not compromised

4.    Responsible for the 24/7 co-ordination of clinical nursing resource with day-to-day management of all areas ensuring safe staffing is achieved across the department both at Warwick and Stratford.

5.    Ensure that resources are used in an appropriate and cost effective manner, and ensuring that all appropriate stock.

6.    Organise repair/maintenance of equipment, ensure that stock levels of consumables are adequate and cost effective

7.    Supervise the work of the clinical teams addressing any issues with practice in a timely manner, and keeping the Nurse Consultant informed

8.    Communicate effectively to patients and staff providing and receiving highly complex, sensitive or contentious information. Persuasive, motivational, training, negotiation, empathic and re-assurance skills are used and required.

9.    Hold and manage the areas nursing pay and non-pay budget/s and is the authorised signatory for the allocated areas

10. Contribute to the divisional financial balance, cost improvement and income generation plans

11. Work collaboratively with the GM, Nurse Consultant, Matron and ACNO for the division to escalate issues and concerns, celebrate achievements and opportunities for staff and service development within nursing, patient safety, and patient experience

12. Analyse data and provide reports as required in response to Oncology performance eg: roster exceptions, finance, etc

13. Participate in the acute oncology senior nurse rota and the out of hour’s rota as required.

14. To ensure that national and local audits are completed in a timely manner

15. Work 60% clinically and 40% managerial

As a non-medical prescriber, prescribe SACT and supporting medications for oncology patients

Quality/Governance

 1.    To participate in the delivery of the clinical governance and risk management agenda of the  oncology service and Trust

2.    Adheres to the Trust’s procedures for managing incidents; developing, and where appropriate liaising with AHP’s, nurses and medical staff in order to devise, action plans to address any risk issues and communicating any changes in practice to all staff. Investigates and prepares statements as requested to assist in investigations

3.    To develop and maintain effective communication systems with all personnel internal and external to the Trust

4.    To participate in multi-disciplinary clinical audit to ensure standards are continually reviewed and developed.

5.    Work in partnership with the General Manager, Nurse Consultant and Heads of Service, to develop, take forward and evaluate direction, policies and strategies

6.    Responsible for development, implementation and evaluation of projects to improve patient care and service development

7.    Promoting best practice in health, safety and security

8.    To accept responsibility and act as a role model in compliance  with trust infection control policies, ensuring training and awareness for self and the team to  maintain good practice

9.    Maintain a safe environment and culture that improves health, safety, quality and security as well as promoting equality and valuing diversity

10. Ensuring that all staff consciously review mistakes, complaints and incidents/near misses as well as successes to improve performance and the level of patient care.

11. To provide support to patients, relatives and staff when exposed to highly unpleasant working conditions and to work towards keeping theses exposures to a minimum

 1.    To maintain Clinical Skills, assess patients, plan and implement care, carry out nursing procedures using highly developed skills, both mental and physical and maintain records to a high standard

2.    Participate in Appraisal and Personal Development Planning (PDP) that meets personal and service objectives ensuring all staff have annual appraisal and PDP’s which reflect personal and professional development as well as divisional and trust objectives

5.    To accept responsibility for own NMC registration and practice in accordance with the NMC code and revalidation requirements

Research and Service Development 

1.    Contribute to the implementation and evaluation of the Oncology strategy within the Elective Division.

2.    In collaboration with the GM, Nurse Consultant, Matron and ACNO, develop, maintain and update relevant clinical policies, protocols and procedures in line with current research and evidence based practice

3.    To participate in the development, implementation and review of specialised Care Pathways within the clinical area providing a highly specialised nursing input. 

4.    To take the lead for the continuing development of pathways to improve the opthalmology service in line with GIRFT and reduce waiting list times

5.    Implement policies for own work area and propose policy change, which may impact beyond own area of activity

6.    To maintain specialist knowledge across the range of work procedures and practices and use knowledge to maintain and improve standards and train staff and students

7.    Cooperates in research procedures and clinical audit

8.    To develop and maintain regular auditing to maintain standards and improve them where improvement can be made

9.    Ensuring knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the Civil Contingencies Act and Major Incident Training.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
