Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for clinical leadership through effective monitoring and implementation of standards and evidenced based practice; ensuring patients receive safe, high quality care.

The post holder will provide direct management and facilitate learning and development within the nursing team.

The post holder will manage preceptorship of newly qualified staff, return to nursing staff and the mentorship of nursing students and health care support workers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Take responsibility for the clinical leadership and direction of Mary Seacole ward which includes the  elective surgery enhanced care area.
Undertake and document a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the patient as appropriate
Deliver a high standard of nursing care based on best practice to maintain patient safety and provide a good patient experience. 
Create and utilize opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care

Undertake  clinical shifts on ward area
    
Work within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising one’s own abilities and limitation
    
 Facilitate and build team working between nurses and multi-disciplinary team to effect high standards of care
    
 Understand mortality data and use knowledge of how nursing can contribute to determine ward standards. Use audit tools to monitor compliance with those standards
    
Maintain a good standard of communication with the multi-disciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives and colleagues.
    
Managerial
    
 To assist Matron to review staffing requirements using a proactive approach to retention and recruitment of staff
    
To support Matron to initiate and prioritise modernisation developments within the Service as part of the business/strategic planning process
    
 To ensure staffing levels within the area are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery.  Maximising the resources that are available with erostering compliance 
    
Through effective negotiation and political awareness create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multi-disciplinary teams
    
 To manage the financial resources for the ward area as delegated by Matron
    
Participate in the on-site Senior Nurse Rota supporting the wider Trust if necessary
    
 Support Matron in the recruitment and selection of new staff
    
Lead the investigation of complaints and clinical incidents related to own clinical area and support the review of complaints in other areas as deemed appropriate by Matron. Provide feedback to staff as appropriate.
    
Deputise for Matron in their absence as requested
    
Ensure information on the Ward/Department information system (PAS and ISOBAR) is correct and updated regularly as appropriate
   

 Education and Training
    
To undertake annual reviews of education requirement of the ward team and developing training plans to submit to Matron
    
To ensure own competence and own personal development plan is reviewed and discussed with Matron annually
    
Plan and implement training sessions within ward environment evaluating effectiveness within clinical care to patients using appropriate audit tools
    
 To ensure each team member has an annual appraisal and personal development plan
    
 Ensure annual attendance of self and staff at mandatory training sessions keeping records of attendance
    
 Create a learning environment which supports and facilitates learning and structured personal development for all staff and learners. All staff to be supported to complete competency training package.
    
Professional
    
 To act as an ambassador for the clinical environment and the Trust, where appropriate, by promoting a professional image of nursing
    
 Ensure current registration of all qualified staff at recruitment and during employment in line with Trust Policy
    
 Ensure current registration with NMC

 

Person specification

Qualifications and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • Relevant current professional qualification Registered General Nurse
  • Teaching/Leadership Qualification
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Educated to degree level in Nursing
  • Demonstrates experience within the strategic planning process.
Desirable criteria
  • Critical Care qualification

Expereince and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years experience at band 6 in an acute clinical setting
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical and professional knowledge
  • Evidence of leadership and change management
  • Evidence of managing own workload with excellent time management skills
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively manage resources
  • Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of Quality Improvement methodology
  • Experience of caring for enhanced care level 1 patients or high dependency patients within a critical care environment or enhanced care environment.

Skills and Abilities
