Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of the MRI department team delivering a high-quality service to patients. Ensure that a high level of safety is maintained, and that policies and protocols are adhered to.
  • To carry out clinical and administrative duties in a team of Radiographers, Assistant Practitioners, Care Assistants and Radiography Students. 
  • As a department we provide a range of imaging services for more than 300,000 people across Nuneaton & Bedworth, North Warwickshire, Southwest Leicestershire and North Coventry.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To perform MRI examinations to the highest standard in accordance with department protocols and guidelines, using professional judgment, skills and experience; is not directly supervised, is accountable for own professional actions at all times, including in emergency and lone working situation. Giving information and advice where appropriate.
  • To be part of the MRI unit maintaining ones expertise on all equipment. To prioritise workload according to clinical need.
  • To maintain high ethical and professional standards in appearance and attitude as within the guidelines published by the College of Radiographers and adhering to the statement of conduct as approved by the Radiographers Board, Health Professions Council. To maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Checking patient’s details prior to examination and ensuring that such details are present and correct on the referral form/computer. Referrals must be justified within departmental protocols and within statutory regulations and the Radiographer must use their professional judgment to refuse inappropriate requests. To ensure that patients are not pregnant prior to certain procedures.
  • To supervise, clinically teach and advise other radiology staff, student radiographers and radiology department assistants.
  • To organise the workload and staffing within MRI taking into account an ever-changing workload, due to emergency cases ensuring an efficient service.
  • To undertake training and hold a certificate of competence to perform intravenous injections and administer contrast media within agreed protocols.
  • Ensure that identified abnormalities are brought to the attention of clinicians (medical staff/advanced practitioners) so that images may be reported upon urgently in the patient’s best Critical evaluation of all images including repeating a sequence or taking further views where necessary.
  • Transfer images electronically to other hospital sites as and when required.
  • To support the extended working day and shift system.
  • To participate in the MRI rota for on call, weekends and public holidays.
  • To be reflective, independent and autonomous in thinking and outlook.
  • To participate in the delivery of the regular Quality Assurance tests within the radiology department and act on results to improve quality of service.
  • Able to communicate imaging procedures empathetically to gain verbal consent and co-operation from a variety of patients including those from different cultural backgrounds, those with learning difficulties, paediatric, the elderly and infirm and traumatised patients.
  • Provide advice on the booking of appointments and advice on preparation as required.
  • Relates aftercare and condition related information to all patients, in a sympathetic and diplomatic manner.
  • To scan without radiological supervision yet acknowledging where physician input is necessary.
  • To participate in the major incident procedure when required.
  • To ensure that both patient care and the patient welfare are kept to the highest standard.
  • To be conversant with and adhere to all safety guidelines relating to the department in connection with access to the MR scanner and to be conversant with emergency procedures.
  • To ensure protocols and procedures are maintained and updated in conjunction with radiologists to ensure the highest standards of patient care.
  • Communicates effectively with a wide range of service users including patients, carers and other healthcare professionals to provide high quality patient care and use of resources and to ensure the smooth running of the service.
  • To use the radiology computer systems for input and retrieval of patient details as required for audit and department statistics.
  • To read and adhere to the policies and procedures of the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust and the MRI operational policies.
  • Have knowledge of clerical and assistant duties and be able to undertake these when required, assisting with the smooth running of the department.
  • To record all equipment faults and arrange for the service engineers to attend and repair any faults as soon as possible. Liaise with other hospitals if service needs to be transferred.
  • To take part in the hospital’s personal development scheme.
  • To maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment and liaise with estates or housekeeping department as necessary.
  • Handle first line complaints and complete the necessary paperwork in line with trust policy.
  • Report to the Superintendent Radiographer any sickness or absence from work of any member of the Department.
  • Any other tasks requested by the Superintendent Radiographer that may reasonably be deemed to come within scope of post.

Person specification

Qualification and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • BSc Diagnostic Radiography or the Diploma of the College of Radiographers
  • Evidence of recent and relevant CPD
  • Qualification in Intravenous Cannulation
Desirable criteria
  • PG Cert in MRI
  • Qualification in IOFB Reporting

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Developed understanding of the need to work as an individual and as part of a team
  • Two years post-qualification experience working in MRI with good demonstration of MRI knowledge and technique
  • Good working knowledge of MRI safety and its correct application when screening a patient for MRI
Desirable criteria
  • Experience performing cardiac MRI, including stress studies
  • Experience in protocol development, writing of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and vetting referrals for MRI
  • Supervision of Assistant Practitioners

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Support, instruct and supervise other staff members, including junior radiographers, assistants and students, as a named Level 1 Trained Practitioner in the Local Rules
  • Recognise the needs of the patient, as well as their own needs, and take appropriate action when exposed to conflicting, distressing or emotional circumstances e.g. abusive patients or relatives, patient claustrophobia etc.
  • Provide, receive and negotiate complex, sensitive and/or contentious information where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathetic or reassurance skills are required
  • Can scrutinize MR images to determine diagnostic value, presence of artefact and need for additional imaging or repeats

  • High standards of professional practice, including conduct, appearance and skill
  • Enthusiastic, motivated and committed individual with good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent patient communication skills demonstrated before, during and after the MRI examination
  • Able to exert frequent and moderate physical effort throughout a duty e.g. positioning and manoeuvring patients and equipment, with or without mechanical aids
  • Flexibility for 12-hour working patterns over a period of 7 days
  • High levels of concentration and attention to detail
