Main duties of the job

The Healthcare Assistant will be an integral member of the ward/department team responsible for the delivery of fundamental care to patients in a safe, caring and compassionate manner under the supervision and guidance of a registered nurse.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Hygiene needs

In accordance with individual care plans, meet the hygiene needs of babies and children, this may include activities such as:

  • Respects the privacy, dignity and beliefs of babies, children, parents and carers when undertaking care needs
  • Works in a person centred way respecting babies, children and parental preferences, wishes and needs
  • Mouth care
  • Eye care
  • Washing and dressing
  • Monitoring skin state of children and inspecting pressure areas.
  • Ensures all babies, parents, families and individuals are treated in a courteous, compassionate and kind manner whilst undertaking care needs
  • Reporting and documenting of all patient care activities, to include improvements, deterioration and changes

Elimination needs

In accordance with individual care plans, support babies and children elimination needs, this may include activities such as:

  • Nappy changes
  • Monitoring of skin state
  • Completion of fluid balance charts and other documentations in relation to elimination needs/ requirements
  • Recognise and report changes to babies elimination needs/requirements
  • Assisting patients to use the most appropriate toilet facility
  • Mobilisation to toilet or use of commode or bed pan
  • Assistance to meet hygiene needs prior to and after using toilet/commode/bedpan/episodes of incontinence.
  • Completion of fluid balance

Nutritional and hydration needs

Assist in the maintenance of babies and children nutrition needs; this may include activities such as:

  • Preparing milk feeds
  • Bottle feeding
  • Supporting parents with breastfeeding or bottle feeding
  • Supporting lactation by teaching mothers to express their breast milk by hand or pump
  • Weighing babies
  • Undertake nasogastric tube feeds –(when training has been undertaken and competencies achieved)
  • Assisting patients to eat and drink
  • Feeding patients when required
  • Assistance to meet hygiene requirements prior to and after eating.
  • Monitoring, recording and reporting weight, food, fluid intake and fluid balance

End of life care

• Assist in the care of the dying baby or child
• Assist with care after death
• Support parents / relatives during end of life care

Person specification

Experience and Knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment
  • SCBU / children’s healthcare experience
  • Acute hospital healthcare experience
  • Has an understanding of the Data Protection Act
  • Has an understanding of infection prevention within a care setting

Qualification and Professional Training

Desirable criteria
  • Minimum of 3 GCSE Grades A-D to include maths, English, other
  • Functional Skills Numeracy Level 1
  • Functional Skills Literacy Level 1
  • Level 2 QCF/NVQ Health & Social Care
  • Level 2 QCF/NVQ Clinical Healthcare Support
  • Care Certificate
  • Basic IT Skills
