Hygiene needs
In accordance with individual care plans, meet the hygiene needs of babies and children, this may include activities such as:
- Respects the privacy, dignity and beliefs of babies, children, parents and carers when undertaking care needs
- Works in a person centred way respecting babies, children and parental preferences, wishes and needs
- Mouth care
- Eye care
- Washing and dressing
- Monitoring skin state of children and inspecting pressure areas.
- Ensures all babies, parents, families and individuals are treated in a courteous, compassionate and kind manner whilst undertaking care needs
- Reporting and documenting of all patient care activities, to include improvements, deterioration and changes
Elimination needs
In accordance with individual care plans, support babies and children elimination needs, this may include activities such as:
- Nappy changes
- Monitoring of skin state
- Completion of fluid balance charts and other documentations in relation to elimination needs/ requirements
- Recognise and report changes to babies elimination needs/requirements
- Assisting patients to use the most appropriate toilet facility
- Mobilisation to toilet or use of commode or bed pan
- Assistance to meet hygiene needs prior to and after using toilet/commode/bedpan/episodes of incontinence.
- Completion of fluid balance
Nutritional and hydration needs
Assist in the maintenance of babies and children nutrition needs; this may include activities such as:
- Preparing milk feeds
- Bottle feeding
- Supporting parents with breastfeeding or bottle feeding
- Supporting lactation by teaching mothers to express their breast milk by hand or pump
- Weighing babies
- Undertake nasogastric tube feeds –(when training has been undertaken and competencies achieved)
- Assisting patients to eat and drink
- Feeding patients when required
- Assistance to meet hygiene requirements prior to and after eating.
- Monitoring, recording and reporting weight, food, fluid intake and fluid balance
End of life care
- Assist in the care of the dying baby or child
- Assist with care after death
- Support parents / relatives during end of life care
Clinical support
When training has been undertaken and competence achieved
- Undertake and record babies’/children vital signs at a frequency determined by the registered practitioner, recognising and reporting any abnormalities immediately to the most appropriate person. This may include:
- Temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respirations
- Oxygen saturation levels
- Use of assisted technology to record vital signs
- PEWS documentation
- Undertake weight, length and head circumference measurements
- Monitor urine output
- Undertake skin assessments
- Undertake risk assessments
- Undertake urinalysis
- Obtain Specimens –urine, faeces, nasal or oral secretions
- Obtain Swabs – Nasal, Groin, Umbilicus, Axilla, Wound
- Cannula removal
- Escort babies & Children to and from Paediatric/Neonatal care areas
- Assist in the preparation of babies/children undergoing treatment and or investigation
- Support babies/children during treatments and or investigations
- Recognise emergency situations and respond accordingly, e.g. Basic CPR
- Act as a chaperone
- Assist with wound care, simple dressings
Communication and relationship skills:
Support effective communication with parents, children, relatives, carers, within the Paediatric/Neonatal team, and the wider multi-disciplinary team by:
- Answer telephone courteously, relay messages accurately and promptly
- Provide and receive information from parents, carers, relatives and staff members
- Answer general enquiries by visitors
- Support child and parental communication and encourage participation in their childs care
- Reporting of all patient care activities, to include improvement, deterioration and changes
- To participate in ward / department meetings including team briefs
- Ensure confidentiality of all patient information and data at all times
Knowledge, training and experience:
- To participate in the appraisal process
- To keep up to date with Statutory and Mandatory Training
- Attend study / training sessions to ensure knowledge, skills and competence are updated
and maintained
Analytical and judgemental skills:
- Able to prioritise own work load
- Be able to recognise when babies/children are deteriorating, unwell and report to appropriate registered practitioner
Planning and organisational skills:
- Able to organise and prioritise own day to day work activities
Physical skills:
- Be able to move and handle babies/children and equipment in a safe and correct manner
- Be able to use equipment safely
- Be able to carry out basic life support (CPR) as and when required
Responsible for policy and service development implementation:
- Have an understanding of clinical audits carried out within ward / department area
- Participate in clinical audits as appropriate
- Adhere to all relevant policies and procedures
Responsible for financial and physical resources:
- To ensure patients possessions are cared for
- Assist with stock control to include, ordering, restocking and maintain cleanliness of the store rooms/cupboards
- Use equipment and resources appropriately
Responsible for human resources
- Provide support and guidance to less experienced Healthcare Assistants
- Act as a buddy to new Healthcare Assistants
Responsibilities for information resources
Be responsible for the recording of personally generated information this will include:
- All information relating to patients and care undertaken, ensuring that all entries in patients notes are counter signed by a registered practitioner
- Completion off all patients charts and records
- Maintain confidentiality of information, taking all necessary precautions when sharing, storing and transmitting information
Freedom to act:
- The Healthcare Assistant will need to demonstrate and act on own initiative whilst working within the constraints of Trust policies, procedures and guidelines, the Healthcare Assistant must at all times be aware of their own limitations and must not attempt to carry out any care if unsure of the procedure or have not received appropriate training and are not competent to do so
Physical effort:
- The role will involve moderate to intense physical effort for several long periods during a shift. This will involve walking, standing for most of the shift, pushing or pulling equipment, kneeling and crouching to deliver care and moving objects
Mental effort:
- As a Healthcare assistant you will be required to undertake frequent routine activities that require concentration, care and attention
Emotional effort:
- Activities will involve providing support to distressed parents and relatives, caring for babies who are unwell, extremely unwell and at end of life
Working conditions:
As a Healthcare assistant you will be frequently exposed to unpleasant working conditions, this will include:
- Exposure to bodily fluids
- Exposure to soiled and infected linen
- Exposure to unpleasant smells
- Exposure to infections
- Occasional and/or frequent exposure to verbal aggression
Professional behaviour:
As a Healthcare Assistant you will be expected to:
- Demonstrate key attitude and behaviour to reflect the Trusts core values, vision, culture and COMPACT agreement

Health and safety:
To be responsible for working in such a way as to ensure the health and safety of yourself, other staff, patients and members of the public.

- To actively participate in “ productive ward” activities
- Maintaining a safe and tidy working environment, general ward cleanliness, tidiness, and ward safety
- Carry out cleaning duties and cleaning audits as required
- Assist with housekeeping activities
- Prepare use and maintain equipment including cleaning and decontamination of equipment
- Use appropriate infection prevention and control procedures and measures which will include
