Main duties of the job

In accordance with patients individual care plan, support patients to meet and maintain their hygiene needs, this may include actions such as:

  • Undertake total hygiene needs for patient
  • Assist patients to wash and dress
  • Assist patients to shower
  • Assist patients with / undertake mouth care, c/o teeth / dentures
  • Assist with / undertake care of hair
  • Assist with / undertake nail care
  • Undertake eye care
  • Assist patients with / undertake shaving
  • Reporting and documentation of all patient care activities, to include improvement, deterioration and changes

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We require enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Assistants to work within our busy medical and surgical ward areas and urgent and emergency care which offer a variety of specialisms and opportunities. 

We have part-time and full-time vacancies available however commitment is required to cover all shifts, days/nights/weekends on a rotation basis

George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust is passionate about patient care. As part of our vision and values, we require all staff to behave in a way that demonstrates their commitment to providing the best possible care for our patients and through our recruitment and selection processes, we seek to test these skills and attributes in all candidates

The successful candidate will be expected to complete the Care Certificate and a HCA Development programme at Level 2 / Level 3 depending upon experience as part of their role and must be committed to completion of these within the required time frame

We also offer a full training programme which includes the following:

Two week  HCSW  onboarding programme which will include the Care Certificate to enhance knowledge base and clinical skills;

Local induction;

Competency pack following HCA programme to build evidence of knowledge, skills and competence;

Undertake a QCF/NVQ / Apprenticeship development programme;

Support in practice/buddy system

Person specification

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment
  • Has an understanding of basic health care requirements
  • Good standard of written English
Desirable criteria
  • Acute hospital healthcare experience

Qualification and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths Grades A-D or equivalent
  • GCSE English Grades A-D or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2 QCF/NVQ Health & Social Care / Level 2 QCF/NVQ Clinical Healthcare Support
  • Basic IT Skills
  • Functional Skills Numeracy Level 2
  • Functional Skills Literacy Level 2

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to understand the importance of confidentiality and to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Has the ability to deal with members of the public from many diverse groups
  • Ability to remain calm under a range of circumstances
