Specialty Doctor in Vascular Surgery

Specialty Doctor

Job overview

A highly experienced Doctor is required for the Vascular Surgery team here at UHCW, with Vascular Surgery experience equivalent to Senior Registrar level. UHCW is a busy major trauma centre serving Coventry and Warwickshire (1.2 million population) and beyond. We have a surgically led EVAR service with an active complex aortic programme (Fenestrated EVAR, TEVAR). We work closely with our cardiac surgeons and have monthly complex aortic MDTs. We have an active research programme and teach Warwick Medical Students as well as postgraduate doctors. As part of the role, there will be learning opportunities throughout the year in arterial, venous and endovascular surgery and opportunities for research projects. There will be active support to help the suitable candidate to achieve CCT as appropriate. There will also be some commitment to transplant surgery on-call only. The role will be full time, Monday to Friday with additional out-of-hours on-call activity at SpR level on the vascular/transplant rota (1:7), which attracts additional remuneration. Experience of vascular surgery is essential.

Main duties of the job

As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies.  Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others.  Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a prerequisite for this post.

Clinical duties will include:

  • Admission and review of patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Supporting the team in theatre sessions, with some independent work.
  • Supporting the team for Outpatients clinics and follow up.
  • Participation in clinical audit within the Unit
  • Opportunity to engage in clinical research.
  • Active involvement in the training and supervision of Junior Medical Staff and medical students on ward rounds, in theatre and in clinics.
  • To mentor and teach junior staff (SHOs).
