Job overview

Are you an outstanding Clinical Psychologist working in Clinical Health Psychology looking for new challenges and career development? We have an exciting opportunity to work as a Consultant Practitioner Psychologist to lead the Intestinal Failure Service at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

This newly created substantive post will provide you with an excellent opportunity to lead developments in psychological provision for intestinal failure within the Trust. We are seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and compassionate person to develop an expanding team of skilled and highly motivated psychological professionals to provide high quality care to people with intestinal failure.

The post holds permanent 37.5 hours at Band 8c - however, applications for part-time hours will also be welcomed.

You will be based at University Hospital in Coventry and, as well as service delivery, the post will provide leadership and strategic direction to the future development of psychological services in severe intestinal failure including wider gastrointestinal services within the hospital. You will also be providing clinical supervision to other clinical psychologists and colleagues as required.

Main duties of the job

1. The post holder will operationally lead and manage the Severe Intestinal Failure (SIF) Psychology Service, providing evidence-based specialist assessment and interventions for patients and families referred to the service. They will be responsible for maintaining professional practice standards within the service. They will provide a high-quality psychology service and maintain a clinical caseload appropriate to the grade, and to provide supervision and consultation to psychology staff and colleagues where indicated.

2. The SIF Psychology provision will involve a direct and indirect psychology service to patients, families and to staff. The post holder will be responsible for developing the service including identifying service priorities, in collaboration with colleagues; recruitment of staff; providing and/or ensuring appropriate line management and other management, professional and clinical supervision is in place for all members of the service. They will also maintain and develop an overall vision for the service. 

3. The post holder will actively support service development and will seek opportunities for further developing and improving psychological provision for wider gastrointestinal services in conjunction with Head of Psychological Services. This will include supporting the development of service proposals and funding bids as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.  The post holder will be expected to have advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in order to deliver highly specialist psychological assessments of patients, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological and physical health information collected from a variety of sources including psychometric tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct observations and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and others involved in the care. 

2. To formulate, make decisions and implement highly specialist plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of a patient’s mental health/physical health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patient’s difficulties, and employing evidence-based, effective interventions.

3. To be responsible for devising and implementing a range of highly specialist psychological interventions for individuals, families and groups with the service, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses. 

4. To make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical culture and developmental and physical health processes that have shaped the individual or system. 

5. To exercise full professional responsibility and support other staff in the assessment, treatment and discharge of patients whose problems are managed by psychological care plans, ensuring appropriate assessment, formulation, interventions and communication with the multidisciplinary team and others involved with the patients’ care.

6. To provide highly specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals and agencies outside the Trust when necessary, contributing directly to the patients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan. 

7. To ensure that all members of the multidisciplinary team have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding the issues for the patients under our care, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of psychological research and theory. This may include the provision of clinical supervision and reflective practice as appropriate.

8. To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual patients and to provide general advice to other professional on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management. 

9. To coordinate the work of others in the team involved with the referred client’s care, taking responsibility for arranging reviews as required and communicating effectively with all involved in the network of care. To monitor progress during multi-disciplinary interventions. 

10. To provide clinical supervision to qualified psychologists, trainee clinical/counselling/health psychologists on placement, assistant psychologists, volunteers and other colleagues, including doctoral and PhD research supervision as required. 

11. To promote and develop research opportunities, in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team to further knowledge, understanding and interventions in the area. To represent and promote the hospital and psychology profession at a national level when appropriate. To be open about issues of confidentiality and consent, care standards, complaints, procedures and evaluative methods with families and other professionals.
