Job overview

The Trauma & Orthopaedic service at UHCW is comprehensive, spanning 70 beds across three wards. Our facilities cater to patients with simple to major traumatic injuries in the trauma unit and general to complex elective day case surgery across UHCW and St Cross Hospital.

As a level one major trauma centre, UHCW offers round-the-clock emergency and trauma surgery, welcoming polytrauma patients from the surrounding region. The department is equipped with a tertiary referral centre, a dedicated major trauma enhanced care unit, and a hyper-acute hip fracture unit. Moreover, UHCW houses a total of 30 theatres spread across Coventry and Rugby sites, featuring state-of-the-art Robotic surgery to address cases that were once deemed inoperable.

UHCW Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery provides specialist musculoskeletal care and often collaborates with the Rheumatology, Physiotherapy, Radiology, and Paediatrics departments to ensure patients receive comprehensive support. The post holder will have the opportunity to work alongside a multitude of healthcare professionals, including consultants, clinical fellows, specialist registrars, associate specialists, ACPs, and other staff grades.

Main duties of the job

The primary role for the post holder is to lead on the management and provision of a comprehensive, high quality pharmacy service to Trauma and orthopaedics wards and specialties. Post holder will also support our pharmacy clinical services improvement projects such as development of pre-op assessment service, day case pathways at UHCW and St Cross hospital and Community diagnostic centre development (CDC). The role will be supported by band 6 and 7 rotational pharmacist, which post holder will provide supervision for their development.

  • Provide specialist clinical pharmacy service to T&O inpatient and elective pathway, major/emergency trauma services which including MTECU and St Cross surgical oversight
  • Work closely with T&O team, theatres, surgical specialties, critical care and associated professional teams to improve the pharmaceutical care of patients
  • Be responsible for all aspects of Medicines Management and Optimisation within their areas
  • To work closely with and the Intensive Care and Surgical Pharmacists as needed, having a good working knowledge of these areas
  • Lead on the provision of education to healthcare professionals in the pharmaceutical and medicines management aspects of their area
  • Support and lead on the development of service improvement project in their directorate for example pre-op clinics, day case pathways and development of community diagnostic centres

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.    Develop and provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service for the patients in your areas at UHCW NHS Trust, and attend multidisciplinary team meetings as required.

2.    Provide strategic guidance on clinical pharmacy issues relating to your areas and offer professional pharmacy leadership in this area of care.

3.    Proactively influence safe and cost-effective drug therapy with other senior clinical staff within your areas. This will include new drug evaluations, financial reporting, and the development of policies.

4.    Identify areas where improvements in both the quality and cost-effectiveness of pharmaceutical care and prescribing can be encouraged.

5.    Work with senior staff in your areas to review and develop policies and procedures to ensure the safe and effective handling of medications. Ensure policies and procedures comply with existing legal requirements, best practice, national and local guidelines, and Health Care Commission requirements. Undertake risk management and develop audits related to the supply, storage, and administration of medicines and other pharmaceuticals.

6.    Lead, develop, and deliver education and training in the pharmaceutical aspects of your areas to other healthcare professionals. This will include trainee pharmacists and diploma students. Encourage and cultivate an environment of clinical and practice-based research and audit. Contribute to current and future research and audit projects associated with the use of drugs within your areas.

7.    Manage and train more junior rotational staff allocated to your areas, including aspects of day-to-day line management, and act as a diploma tutor/trainee designated supervisor as needed. Act as a team leader for the clinical pharmacy team in your area (e.g., as group/directorate lead).

8.    Practise as an expert practitioner, providing advice and consultancy to patients, healthcare professionals, and other agencies relating to the pharmaceutical aspects of trauma and orthopaedics in your areas. This includes having a good working knowledge of general surgery, plastic surgery, and intensive care.

9.    Participate as part of the MDT on consultant ward rounds, and work towards supporting prescribing on the ward as an independent prescriber according to your scope of practice.
