Lead Pharmacist – Cancer Services + EDC

NHS AfC: Band 8b

Job overview

In recognition of the essential and valued role of Pharmacy within Cancer Services at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, a new Lead Pharmacist post has been created. This role will have an autonomous leadership role in the cancer and technical services team: aseptic production, clinical chemotherapy and the oncology and haematology wards.

The successful pharmacist will lead our highly valued and skilled Oncology/ Haematology and Palliative Care team, many of whom are independent prescribers and who have active roles within MDTs including participation in outpatient chemotherapy clinics.

You will already have significant demonstrable hospital knowledge and experience of the pharmaceutical care of oncology and haematology patients alongside considerable staff management and training experience. You will have practical experience of using a SACT electronic prescribing system. You will be an active lead engaged in developing improvements and driving innovation forward for our pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and ATOs.

You will co-ordinate a patient-focused clinical service to our wards, specialist outpatient clinics, clinical verification of chemotherapy, and the pharmacy management of our electronic SACT protocols. You will also be the clinical training lead for our future cancer pharmacists and support the career pathways for our existing highly skilled advance team.

*** Please be advised that interviews are proposed for 15 July 2024 ***

Main duties of the job

  • Be the team leader through line management for the Oncology/ Haematology/ Palliative Care pharmacist Team, ensuring the effective management of clinical and operational service delivery.
  • Develop and oversee training for pharmacists in oral chemotherapy, chemotherapy verification (screening), and clinical ward/external hospice services.
  • Co-ordinate and support the training and development of all staff: ATOs, Technicians and Pharmacists, involved in chemotherapy. Ensure the service and staff advance to meet the needs of patients with cancer, and we have professional development at the heart of our strategy.
  • Oversee the continued improvement of the electronic chemotherapy prescribing system and ensure that SACT protocols are managed and maintained as needed.
