Job overview

We have a really exciting opportunity for you to join our Oncology Service as an Oncology Head & Neck  Clinical Nurse Specialist with a focus on Systemic Anti Cancer Treatment (SACT) - this is a newly created role.

We are looking for a dynamic, inspirational and forward thinking nurse,  who is passionate about Cancer Nursing.  You should have extensive experience in oncology as well as having excellent leadership, management and communication skills.

Enthusiasm, a desire to learn and flexibility are essential for this role, as are good interpersonal and organisational skills.  You will take pride in your responsibility for the quality of the care in your clinical area and provide sound clinical and professional leadership to your multi-disciplinary team. The Service aims to deliver and sustain the highest standards of care, quality, safety and dignity for all of our patients. 

The post will be based at the University Hospitals site however, there may be travel to the site of Rugby St Cross for outpatient clinics.

Main duties of the job

To establish and provide a specialist nursing service for the care and ongoing management of patients diagnosed with head and neck cancers undergoing Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT). You will participate in the provision of high-quality care from diagnosis, through treatment and during follow up. You will make informed decisions within your own area and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards and targets are met. The post holder will develop and implement opportunities for advancing nursing practice and for ensuring collaborative working relationships, incorporating expert clinical practice, leadership, consultation, and education.

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute towards corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.  
  • The post holder will be a designated Oncology Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist within the hospital and will provide expert specialist advice for patients, relative and carers in relation to a head and neck cancer diagnosis with a focus on SACT and to other health care professionals.
  • To provide emotional support to patients, their families and staff during difficult situations e.g. breaking bad news or following an unexpected event.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To be an active member of the appropriate site-specific MDT, utilising excellent communication skills, enabling maintenance of a high-quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations. 
  • Demonstrate a high level of clinical, technical and research skills through breadth and depth of knowledge.
  • A knowledgeable clinical nurse specialist, supporting staff, the Oncology Head and Neck Service and policy development within the specialty. 
  • To develop nurse led clinics and to undertake highly specialised technical and/or practical skills, including advanced health assessments and Non-Medical prescribing in relation to SACT to ensure optimum patient management.
  • To ensure that the patients holistic needs are considered in the decision-making process.
  • A resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice. 
  • Responsible for identifying and assessing complex clinical and non-clinical issues, implementing resolutions and monitoring/auditing outcomes.
  • Responsible for education and training provision of identified staff groups within defined areas and ensuring that evidence-based care is embedded into practice. 
  • Utilise and ensure that others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce, and resource data available.
  • Regularly manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
