Job overview
The Practice Placement Midwife will work collaboratively with the trust and higher education institutions facilitating continued development of high- quality practice placements for pre-and post-registration midwives.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will fulfil the role of a specialist midwife within the maternity service, undertaking at least one shift per month in clinical practice and also participate in the on-call Rota in line with the trusts escalation policy.
The post holder will ensure the relevant guidelines and clinical pathways are up to date supporting the practice educator midwives.
The post holder will support the future maternity workforce strategy in conjunction with the Maternity Workforce Matron and Director of Midwifery, actively leading on careers events and supporting recruitment.
The post holder will lead on the following key areas:
· Supporting midwifery students within their clinical placement and be a first point of contact for assessors to offer guidance for issues relating to practice placement areas.
· To continue to develop, support and evaluate Learning Zones within inpatient maternity wards.
· To be conduit between the universities, midwifery students and clinical placements
· To provide pastoral support and training to student midwives
· Allocations and rostering – ensuring that student placement is aligned to the allocations provided by the Practice Placement Coordinator and rostered to meet the NMC competencies.
· Support and lead if required with investigations when practice concerns.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Practice Placement Midwife will have experience that will enable them to:
· Liaise via the Maternity Workforce Matron and Practice Education Team at the relevant universities with regards to practice placement management.
· In collaboration with the practice education co-ordinator and the Maternity Workforce Matron assist in the management of the Trust’s portfolio of student placements.
· Lead and expand midwifery practice placement opportunities, as necessary, across a broad range of clinical areas in conjunction with the guidance from the practice education teams.
· Contribute to and provide regular reports in relation to all aspects of placement capacity, quality and monitoring in the practice- learning environment.
· Take a lead role in the governance of Practice Assessor and Supervisor/educator compliance, placement capacity, evaluation of placements, audits, attrition data, and Datix relevant to learners and students.
· To lead on Practice Development Initiatives as required and requested by the Director of Midwifery.
Communicate effectively with clinical, operational, administration and university staff via email, telephone and face to face contact in order to deliver the requirements of the role, supporting students.
