Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Northumbria Primary Care for a Band 4 Registered Pharmacy Technician to join the team, supporting a group of GP practices within our North Northumberland Neighbourhood (Rothbury General Practice). The successful candidate will work closely with clinical and administrative colleagues to process a wide range of medication related tasks.

The Pharmacy Technician role is a new development within NPC, the successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive primary care medicines management system acting on current best practice. The Pharmacy Technician will be required to undertake activities predominantly within practice, but will need to be flexible to work to the wider demands of the network. 

Main duties of the job

The role will contribute to the efficient and effective delivery of medicines to patients e.g. medicines supply, actioning of discharge summary medication changes, liaising with care homes re prescription queries and supporting the organisation move towards online prescription services. An understanding of primary care operations and use of SystmOne would be an advantage but is not essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To work under the management of the Clinical Pharmacy to deliver a comprehensive medicines management hub in a primary care setting to ensure a safe and efficient service is maintained, delivering a range of medicines management activities including medicines reconciliation and repeat prescription requests

To liaise with pharmacy staff in all sectors and other healthcare professionals to ensure a patient orientated medicines management service is provided, conducting medicines reviews for patients identified by the wider multidisciplinary team or from other medicines management initiatives.

To work closely with the Clinical Pharmacist to adopt a team approach to medicines management, acting as a key member of the multidisciplinary team and the wider pharmacy team, providing medicines management advice to healthcare professionals, patients and carers.

To work with the Clinical Pharmacist to develop and undertake medicines management audits, to support discussion within the practice and agree subsequent actions.

To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within Northumbria Primary Care. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3 supported by appropriate underpinning knowledge e.g. national certificate in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent qualification.
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • To work towards completing the CPPE Primary Care Pharmacy Education Programme for Pharmacy Technicians once competency requirements are met and a training opportunity arises. There is an expectation that this is achieved within 24 months of appointment. Once complete they will know when and to whom to refer any problems, and will have a duty of care to ensure their work is of a required standard as dictated in departmental standard operating procedures
  • Have relevant evidence of CPD demonstrating that their knowledge and training are current.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous relevant experience working in Pharmacy
  • Knowledge of the operation of Pharmacy Services.
