Job overview

The Optometry/Orthoptic departments of the Newcastle Eye Centre are looking for a friendly, positive thinking, organised and motivated individual to work as a Housekeeper (part time – 22.5 Hours) within both departments. Orthoptists and Optometrists are non-medical eye care professionals who provide outpatient care to adults and children and we are seeking to broaden our team with this exciting post.

The successful candidate will be based at Newcastle Eye Centre, RVI. The exact hours can be flexible but will be expected to include a start time of 7:30am or finish time of 6:00pm, Monday to Friday.  You should be highly motivated, reliable, and flexible. Working within the multi-disciplinary team and by yourself at times, you will organise, order stock and maintain the cleanliness and organization of both departments to ensure the smooth running of the area.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will take responsibility for ensuring that the environment including clinical equipment is clean and well maintained and Infection Control policies and standards are maintained according to national and local policy.

They will undertake the ordering of optometry and orthoptic stock including low visual aids, Fresnel prisms and other supplies used frequently in the department.

There will be some direct patient interaction as the successful candidate will be expected to identify any concerns around patient comfort or safety and escalate to the relevant clinician, as well as assisting with the transfer of patients to other areas within the hospital.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  •  Be an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team assisting the Ward / Department to maintain a safe, clean and comfortable environment for the patients, their families and visitors.
  • Report any concerns regarding the patient’s condition to the qualified nurse/Registered Clinician.
  •  Maintain patient’s privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Report to the Nurse or Clinician in Charge any issues that may prevent cleaning or compromise the safety of the environment.
  • Actively contribute to the provision of nutrition of the patients on the Ward / Department.
  • May undertake administrative and clinical duties as required.
  • To abide by Trust policies and procedures.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 in appropriate subject (or on pathway) or equivalent qualification / experience

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understand basic food hygiene concepts.
  • Basic knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control.
  • Understanding of confidentiality
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of previously working in a health care setting.
  • Understanding of basic safeguarding
  • Evidence of understanding of Trust Business
  • Experience of working in the Trust previously

Skills & Abilities

  • Basic IT skills.
