Job overview
Applications are invited for a 12 month appointment as a Clinical Research Fellow in Ophthalmology based within Newcastle Eye Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The main aim of this post is to assist with a number of clinical trials and related projects and to develop new areas of clinical research. There are also clinical sessions in medical/surgical retina. There may be an opportunity for exposure to orbital/oculoplastic research. The post has a good track record of providing clinical and research experience and giving opportunity for presentations and publications. Previous candidates have gone on to secure prestigious clinical fellowships. The department is well resourced with excellent diagnostic retinal imaging equipment, including 3D heads up display for VR surgery. There may be an opportunity for cataract surgery and vitreoretinal theatre depending on interests and experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The aim of these posts is to support clinical trials, be involved in research projects and gain retinal clinical experience. It is expected that presentations and publications would be forthcoming.
There is no on call commitment for this post. GCP certification is required.
Provisional timetable:
The timetable includes medical retina clinics, uveitis and potentially vitreoretinal clinics, cataract surgery and vitreoretinal theatre, depending on interests and experience.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC registration at time of application
- GCP Training.
Desirable criteria
- On GMC Specialist Register.
- Part 2 FRCOphth.
- Previous experience in NHS.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Clinical ophthalmology experience
- Good history & examination skills.
- Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations.
- Image interpretation relevant to practice.
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Desirable criteria
- UK based run through training with satisfactory ARCP outcomes.
- Independent cataract surgeon.
- Previous experience of medical retina work including laser and intraocular injections.
- Ability to interpret retinal imaging.
Maintaining Clinical Competence
Essential criteria
- Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments.
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors.
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit projects.
- Experience of research.
Desirable criteria
- Audit outcomes.
- Evidence of presentations and publications.
- Experience of working on clinical trials.
