An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Practitioner in Speech and Language Therapy to work in Neurological Services based at Walkergate Park. This is a part time (30 hours per week), permanent position.
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Speech and Language Therapy service as an Assistant Practitioner. You will work into a well-established, multi-disciplinary team, committed to providing the best quality service to our patients.
Walkergate Park is one of the most advanced centres of its kind in Europe. The team has extensive experience and expertise in managing physical disabilities, neuro-behavioural, neuro-psychological, and neuro-psychiatric problems. This fully comprehensive service is delivered from state-of-the-art premises, purpose designed for modern rehabilitation practice, in the North East of England. The centre provides high quality rehabilitation services on an inpatient, outpatient, day patient or community basis.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent awareness of communication difficulties.

You should have an interest and some experience relevant to this clinical field and be keen to develop your skills. You will be able to work well as part of a close team and be able to work independently.
You will liaise closely with colleagues to address communication and eating/drinking difficulties as part of a holistic, service user centred service and possess excellent communication and organisational skills.
Under the support and supervision of a Speech and Language Therapist, you will work to support patients to achieve their communication and swallowing therapeutic goals. In practice, you will provide a range of communication interventions with the individual both directly and indirectly. These interventions will take the form of 1:1 work, group work, resource making and admin tasks. You will contribute to care plans and provide high quality service user centred care and participate in programs to aid a person’s swallow.

The Speech and Language Therapy Service in Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is continuing to develop and grow to meet the needs of our patients and local communities.
You will join a large, dynamic team of Speech and Language Therapy colleagues in established, multi-disciplinary teams who are committed to providing the best quality service to our patients. We actively encourage professional development and provide opportunities for all in the Speech and Language Therapy team to contribute to the development of the service.
We will provide you with a comprehensive induction period and you will have access to ongoing clinical supervision and appraisal with development reviews that will provide you with support and the specialist skills required to meet the holistic needs of the patients in your care. The post holder will be expected to actively engage in the Trusts supervision and continuing professional development process.

- Foundation degree in applied social studies or alternative (NVQ/BTEC/QCF) with additional training to diploma level equivalent in the speciality field.
Knowledge and Experience

- Experience of supervising/teaching
- Experience of working with service users with complex health needs and have awareness of communication difficulties
- Experience of working in a relevant/similar setting with experience of and commitment to multi-disciplinary team work
- Working understanding of the practice of speech and language therapy

- Experience of involving service users/carers in evaluation/planning and monitoring of services
- Experience of working in therapy
Skills and Ability

- Good IT, record keeping and time management skills
- Appreciation of mental health conditions and/or learning disabilities and the impact of these on a person
- Ability to cope with distressing and emotional situations
