An exciting opportunity has arisen with in the Neuro-Rehabilitation Outpatient Department, Walkergate Park for an enthusiastic, dynamic, compassionate clinician.

This is a development post progressing from Band 5 to Band 6 on completion of  training and achieving competencies in the management of Dystonia. 

You will  work as part of a  MDT providing the highest standard of care, supporting the outpatient clinics whilst developing skills to become a dystonia practitioner.

You will develop the competencies to be an autonomous practitioner in the assessment, treatment and administration of Botulinum Toxin injections for patients who have been diagnosed with Dystonia, working under a Patient Group Directive (PGD).

You will be responsible for management of your own case load of patients both in the Outpatient clinics and the community.

You will also provide support to the wider MDT within the Outpatient setting.

You will be well supported in your role by an experienced team of practitioner’s and mentors and will have the opportunity to develop clinical and research skills.

Main duties of the job

To be an autonomous practitioner in the assessment and treatment of patients with a diagnosis of Dystonia, including administering Botulinum Toxin Injections, working under a Patient Group Directive

To be a proactive member of the Neuro-Rehabilitation Outpatient team, working in conjunction with the MDT to achieve a high standard of care for patients attending all Clinics with a range of Neurological conditions.

To provide support to the wider MDT within the Outpatient setting.

In conjunction with the Operational Team Lead and Clinical Nurse Managers have clinical responsibility for promoting, implementing, evaluating and maintaining the highest standard of care within the clinical area.

To undertake service evaluation including audit promoting integrated governance agenda.

To provide Clinical Supervision to more junior members of staff and students.

To provide compassionate care that is based on empathy, kindness, respect and dignity.

To incorporate a client centred philosophy into practice and client centred collaborative care

Demonstrate flexibility in the role, working across clinical pathways to support the needs of the service, whilst ensuring the delivery of high quality care at all times.

The Neurological Services encompass outreach services and those based at WGP.  There are 4 dedicated inpatient wards (neuro-rehabilitation, neurobehavioural and neuro-psychiatry) providing 65 beds in total. There are also outpatient and community services including the following : Neurological Rehabilitation Outpatient's; Regional Disability Team; Community Multiple Sclerosis Team; Neuropsychiatry Outpatient's; Regional Communication Aids Service; Environmental Control Service; North East Drive Mobility; Northumberland Head Injury Service; and Community Acquired Brain Injury Services based in Gateshead, South Tyneside  and Sunderland.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Within WGP we have an extensive Outpatient department providing community rehabilitation clinics for the management of spasticity, dystonia, multiple sclerosis, continence, sex and relationships for people with a long term neurological condition. In addition there are medical rehabilitation, orthotic, hand splinting and cognitive assessment clinics and a counselling service for people with a neurological condition.

The role requires you:

To provide assessment and appropriate treatment (including administering Botulinum Toxin Injections) for the management of Dystonia, working under a patient group directive. 

To provide patient care both within the Outpatient department and at Outreach sites as well as home visits where clinically indicated.

To provide  support in the day to day operational management of the Neuro-rehab outpatient department.

To have knowledge and experience of working with people living with a neurological condition , their families and carers. Understanding differing clinical presentations of aquired brain injury/neurological conditions and how they impact on function. 

To provide support to all the Outpatient clinics including physical health monitoring eg venepuncture as required.

To be actively involved in service development including audit, service evaluation, research and development.

To provide clinical supervision to more junior members of the team and/or students.

To represent the Neuro-Rehab OP team within Neurological and Specialist Services within the CBU.

To provide education where appropriate to the MDT and external agencies.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Level Registration RMN/RNMH/RNLD Qualification
  • Experience of working with service users and carers in successful delivery of treatment plans
  • Complete preceptorship programme for newly qualified nurses
  • Multi-Proven ability to develop therapeutic partnership with service users and carers disciplinary team work.
  • Proven ability to be able to communicate interventions to service users.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • 12 months post registration experience, and completed preceptorship
  • Knowledge of relevant contemporary professional theories of mental health care and evidence based interventions.
  • Knowledge and Experience of working within a Multidisciplinary Team
  • Understanding of the statutory issues which impact on service users.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of Dystonia and it’s management

Skills and Competencies

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Evidence of excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Experience and understanding of Safeguarding processes
