Job overview

The appointed individual will support the site operational Building management staff with the day to day operational building maintenance. This will include effectively diagnosing and repair faults in building structure, fabric and finishes to deal with new situations as they arise and to pass on knowledge to others. To set out new work or set up new production appropriate to his/her trade using relevant instruments without supervision. To manufacture, assemble, erect and install new work. 

 

The post holder will be based at Hexham General Hospital

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be an integral part of a strong site based locality team structure. As an experienced individual who will be the first line Building services crafts person for all day to day breakdowns, repairs and planned preventative maintenance works and small capital projects. You will have a good understanding of the requirements and regulations to undertake the maintenance and installation of fire doors and fire compartments  principally undertaken by yourself as a directly employed craftsmen and sub-contractors. You will be versatile and able to handle conflicting priorities within this dynamic hospital environment, possessing great interpersonal skills that will allow you to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical customers. You will already have significant building services experience and have the ability to work under pressure.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To carry out planned and unplanned maintenance duties on Trust and NHFM premises as directed by the operations and project officers, supervisor and chargehand.

Undertake new and minor works/upgrades as and when required.

To maintain properly and effectively, to a high standard, all building structures, fabric and finishes and internal/external furnishings within Trust and NHFM properties and associated buildings, as directed.

To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised CITB Craft Apprenticeship or *equivalent with previous experience of working within an Estates Healthcare environment having demonstrated total commitment to versatility and flexibility
  • Must hold a relevant City & Guilds, BTEC or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in Joinery/building Craftsperson
Desirable criteria
  • BTEC HNC

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience post apprenticeship experience or equivalent proving ability
  • Experience of various painting and decorating techniques, such as, spray painting, and rag rolling etc.
  • Experience of sign writing and road marking including setting out from drawing
  • Experience of preparation/clinical cleaning of walls etc. contaminated with bodily fluids
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience and professional specialist knowledge of working within a healthcare environment.

Essential criteria
  • It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes, or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role
