Job overview

The General Porter plays a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the hospital or site by transporting equipment, supplies, mail, and patients, as well as assisting with various logistical tasks. This role requires flexibility, excellent teamwork, and the ability to work independently when needed. The General Porter will also need to adhere to safety and hygiene standards while performing tasks efficiently and professionally.

Main duties of the job

  •  Patient transportation - Taking responsibility under the direction of the nursing team for the safe movement and transfer of 

    the patient, their belongings, drugs, and medical records along with the patient

  • Following QEF Policy, collect and distribute medical devices from the hospitals loan library service

  • The collection and delivery service for internal and external mail, parcels, supplies, pharmacy items.

  • Furniture collection and removal.

  • The storage, distribution and collection of medical devices

  • The collection of dirty and the distribution of clean linen

  • The collection and safe storage of site waste 

  • To provide a collection and delivery service for internal and external mail, parcels, supplies, pharmacy items etc. 

  • Movement of items of furniture under the direction of charge hand supervisor

  • Respond as directed to assist in emergency procedures including urgent bloods, specimens etc and major incident and fire.

  • Distribution and storage of medical gasses 

  • Collection and transportation of food regeneration trolleys and other food items from catering department to user areas, 

    subsequent removal and return to the main kitchen.

  • Duties associated with the mortuary and deceased appropriate record keeping out of hours.

  • To project at all times a friendly, helpful, courteous and professional manner while dealing with all customers of QEF

  • To provide general assistance to all staff, visitors and patients in a courteous and professional manner

QE Facilities (QEF) is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (GHNT), based in the North East of England.

We provide a range of non- clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organisations. Our services include estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA). 

In addition, we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.

QE Facilities work to their own Terms and Conditions, and these are not the same as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Terms and Conditions. This is not an Agenda for Change Pay Rate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Safely move patients between departments, ensuring their comfort and security during transfers.
  • Transport patients’ belongings, medical records, and equipment such as IV stands during transfers.
  • Collect and deliver internal and external mail, parcels, supplies, and pharmacy items to and from various departments.
  • Transport food trolleys from the kitchen to wards and other user areas, and return trolleys to the kitchen once used.
  • Assist with the collection and delivery of medical devices and equipment as required.
  • Assist with the movement and transportation of furniture and large items under the direction of the supervisor.
  • Respond to requests to move or set up equipment for various departments and events.
  • Assist in emergency procedures such as transporting urgent blood samples, specimens, or other critical items.
  • Respond to major incidents and fire drills as directed by the supervisor.
  • Assist with duties in the mortuary as needed, including appropriate record-keeping out of hours.
  • Carry out general assistance tasks to support staff, visitors, and patients in a courteous and professional manner.
