Job overview

We are looking for a permanent 0.8 Full time Equivalent Speciality Doctor working at ST5 or above  to support the Community Paediatric Department.

Gateshead Community Paediatric team are integrated with the broader Paediatric Department working in Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The job consists mainly of delivering weekly outpatient clinics and working as part of a multi -disciplinary team.

There are no out of hours on call commitments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will manage a caseload of children with a range of developmental and learning needs, conducting appropriate assessments, giving diagnoses where appropriate, and providing advice and management of associated health complaints. They will liaise with professionals from across agencies involved in the child’s care to promote the best possible outcomes. 

The successful applicant may have the opportunity to complete assessments for pre-school children (under 5 years) where there are concerns about possible Autism Spectrum Disorder as an appropriate neurodevelopmental diagnosis. These clinics will run jointly with a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist or Autism Care Co-ordinator. The post holder will have access to wider Multi-agency information about the child to support he clinic appointment. The post-holder, together with a Speech and Language Therapist or Care Co-ordinator, will be able to determine the appropriateness of an ASD diagnosis for the children seen, communicate the outcome verbally and in writing to the parents/carers and the wider MDT and be able to determine any appropriate next steps for the child’s community paediatric follow-up.

 

There will be the opportunity for the successful applicant to develop an area of special interest within the Community Paediatric Service.

There may be opportunity for the successful applicant to carry out Initial Health Assessments for Children in Care.

 There will be opportunities for the successful post-holder to undertake Quality Improvement activities relevant to their role and expertise.

 The postholder will be allocated a clinical supervisor. We are keen to support career development for the postholder.
