Job overview
Apprentice Senior Healthcare Assistant Support Worker Band 3 to work within the Cardiothoracic Department of recovery at the Freeman Hospital. You will be working with a dynamic team of professionals that are very passionate about the recovery of post operative patients. A passionate person with excellent communication skills that enjoys working within a small team would be ideally suited to join our team.
Cardiothoracic Recovery is very nurse lead in regards to making clinical decisions to discharge patients back to ward areas or other departments such as coronary care, high dependency therefore a confident, enthusiastic practitioner would be a great addition to our team.

Main duties of the job
Recovering post operative adult patients who have undergone surgery and making clinical decisions with support from team members to discharge their patients to other ward/departments within the freeman hospital. Excellent communication skills with patients and their carers not only with adults but children as well. Basic IT skills for documenting and imputing of patients observations.
The Band 3 professional will be expected to recover post operative patients following surgery under local, sedation and general anaesthesia. They will be expected to carry out baseline observations and act upon the observations accordingly with the support from their team. They will be required to work closely with the team members within recovery and professionals such as cardiologists, anaesthetists and surgeons being able to communicate effectively regarding any issues identified. Good computer skills will be required as paperlite is now used for patients documents and the recording of records. Stocking up checking equipment and general day to day tasks to help the recovery environment run smoothly. Obtaining blood gas samples from Arterial lines and having a basic understanding on what to look out for so that it can be acted upon appropriately, support and teaching can be given within recovery. Moving and handling will be required as we reposition patients on a regular basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must:
- Have the right to work and remain in the UK.
- Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years.
- Provide evidence of required English and maths qualifications.

- You will not be considered if you have an equivalent or higher qualification in the same or a very similar subject.
- You must not be engaged in any other funded training or education programme.
- We cannot sponsor applicants during or on successful completion of the apprenticeship so please ensure you meet visa status eligibility.
- Throughout the apprenticeship the post holder will gain experience working in the Team within the Trust
- The successful candidate will develop the required skills to assist the Registered Practitioners and Assistant Practitioners in the day to day delivery of patient care in the Peri-operative setting, to ensure a consistently high quality service to the Trust
- The successful candidate will complete the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship within 18 to 24 months
- To abide by Trust policies and procedures
- Maintain patients’ privacy and dignity at all times and provide care in a compassionate and sensitive manner
- Be an effective part of the multi-disciplinary team contributing to the departmental objectives
- Contribute to housekeeping and other departmental duties as required, eg general tidiness, pre-determined stock levels are met and clinical equipment is clean, working and stored correctly
- Assist with administrative and clerical duties as required
