Are you an Occupational Therapist with broad clinical skills and experience of service development? Do you want to be part of an innovative Occupational Therapy service developing the role of the profession within Primary Care Clusters? If so then this is the job for you.

Since 2021, Occupational Therapy has played a key role within the multi-professional GP led teams of the Upper Valleys Primary Care Cluster. With continued funding for the next financial year secured (until 31st March 2025), we are excited to advertise this post to both maintain and grow the valuable role and offer of Occupational Therapy for this population by providing quality, timely, consistent assessment and outcomes for patients and their carers in the community.

Upper Valleys Primary Care Cluster consists of 4 GP Practices with whom the successful candidate will be working alongside: Dulais Valley PCC, Pontardawe PCC,  Amman Tawe Partnership and Vale of Neath Practice.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have broad clinical experience and an ability to adapt current skills to a varied population, knowledge of outcome measures and service development tools, experience of implementing these in practice and presenting results to a wide audience. The post holder requires well developed communication skills and have proven experience of working effectively as part of a multi professional team. They must be self motivated, enthusiastic and have a drive to maintain evidence based, quality patient care closer to home. Main duties include:

  • To be a clinical leader for Occupational Therapy within the Primary Care Cluster service, leading by example, demonstrating good practice, openness and responsiveness to emerging evidence.
  • Manage a defined caseload of clients with complex needs using evidence based /client centred principles, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the outcomes of intervention in the community whilst maintaining associated records.
  • To provide highly developed expertise within the MDT setting of the Primary Care Cluster 
  • To provide clinical leadership for junior staff as delegated by line manager.
  • To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of Occupational Therapy Services within the Primary Care Cluster, holding responsibility for defined projects.
  • To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Health Board Occupational Therapy Service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To be a clinical leader for Occupational Therapy within identified specialist area leading by example, demonstrating good practice, openness and responsiveness to emerging evidence. 
2. To manage a defined caseload within specialist area, using evidence based /patient centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the outcomes of intervention where appropriate; hospital, community, patients homes, and maintaining associated records. To organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
3. To provide highly developed expertise within the MDT setting.
4. To provide clinical leadership for junior staff, through supervision and appraisal as delegated by line manager.
5. To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of Occupational Therapy Services within a designated area/team, holding responsibility for defined projects.
6. To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Health Board
Occupational Therapy Service.
7. To be a strong advocate for the OT profession and seek opportunities for service progression in line with Government driver.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Occupational Therapy (or equivalent OT qualification)
  • Professional Registration with HCPC
  • Accredited fieldwork supervisor for the education of OT students
  • Specific recognised postgraduate training/courses relevant to specialist area equivalent to masters level
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership / management training
  • Membership of professional body BAOT

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of autonomous caseload management, comprising assessment, planning intervention and evaluation within relevant clinical area
  • Understanding of the Occupational Therapy process and ability to apply current best practice to designated client group
  • Ability to interpret the results of functional assessments and activity analysis with an emphasis on skills required with designated client group
  • Knowledge of the principles of Clinical Governance and the ability to apply to working practice.
  • An understanding of the influence of health and social care policy on occupational therapy and the wider economic and socio-political issues that impact on service delivery
  • Experience of multi agency working
  • Awareness of Health and Safety legislation
  • Documented evidence of CPD
  • Understanding of professional ethics and their application in practice
  • Understanding of a wide range of pathological and traumatic processes and realise the nature and cause of occupational dysfunction
  • Application of knowledge gained through attendance at relevant clinical courses
  • Awareness of specific government policy / legislation pertinent to the clinical areas
  • Previous experience of supervising staff

  • Experience of research and/or audit and implementing evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of standardised and non standardised assessments and rehab techniques appropriate to clinical areas
