Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Department of Breast Surgery is a member of the Surgical Directorate, well known in the region for providing excellent patient care as well as exceptional training for the specialist Fellows, registrars and junior doctors.

We are proud of our day case surgery service and the dedication to the GIRFT drive in maximising day case surgery. The department is keen to support innovation  in this area and building on the regional block service that most patients receive, we have recently started ambulatory local anaesthetic infusion catheters to facilitate day case surgery for breast reconstructions.

Breast day case and in-patient surgery take place at Wexham Park and Frimley Park Hospitals supported by a clinically responsive ITU/HDU team. Including lists in the minor ops suite. The Radiology department provides excellent support and its facilities are in the process of being extended and refurbished. Magseed and MagTrace are used widely within the Trust as well as isotope scintigraphy for sentinel nodes.

The Department has a weekly site-specific local Cancer MDT and, in addition, we have a monthly cross-site Oncoplastic MDT with Plastic Surgery where interesting and complex non-cancer cases are discussed. There is a dedicated half-day teaching for juniors per week and Academic Half-Day once a month to discuss all current issues, as well as M & M. The department has a strong emphasis on clinical governance and has many audits on-going. The appointee will be expected to participate in all of these activities and lead some of them. We place an important focus on continuous professional development and will actively support you in the development and achievement of personal goals. We also aim to provide peer mentorship.

The Breast department at Parapet/Wexham works closely with our sister Breast Unit in the south of trust at Frimley Park Hospital. This is true particularly in the use of resources and delivery of care. Every other month there is an all day joint departmental clinical govenance, teaching and audit meeting for all consultants, juniors and BCNs.

The Frimley Breast department has close links with the London Deanery and we regularly host 1-2 rotating higher surgical trainees (ST3-7) on an annual basis, as well as two Oncoplastic Breast Fellows.

We currently have breast nurse practitioners who attend the cancer MDT and liaise closely with cancer patients. They are supported by the Macmillan Cancer Navigators and admin staff who also support the Self-Supported Management Pathway for discharged patients.
