An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within Maternity at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust to implement and lead the Stop Smoking in-house service for people who are identified as smokers in pregnancy.
This advertisement is for the Wexham Park Hospital site.
The post holder will be responsible for delivering the objectives of the smoke free pregnancy programme, developing, and promoting the service, both to health care professionals and pregnant smokers.
They will work alongside and support the community midwifery teams and work with all members of the multi-disciplinary team. They will ensure that maternity staff are up to date with current practice and techniques in helping pregnant women or members of their household to quit smoking. The role will focus on all areas of stop smoking support including delivering education and training programmes as well as mandatory training.
They will develop network and regional opportunities with other health care professionals and service providers engaged in this field of work, to promote and establish an evidence-based approach.

Be responsible implementing, tracking, and demonstrating compliance for Element 1: Reducing smoking in pregnancy of the Saving Babies’ Lives (SBL) version 3 care bundle.
Work with EPIC (electronic patient record) to ensure data is recorded and reported in order to demonstrate compliance with SBL and CNST.
Be responsible for delivering the objectives of the smoke free pregnancy programme, developing, and promoting the service, both to health care professionals and pregnant smokers.
Be responsible for providing behavioural support to tobacco users during their pregnancy.
Will identify tobacco users who are pregnant, assessing their needs and agreeing on the most appropriate strategy to assist the quit. This will include an initial meeting and 12 weeks of smoking cessation support.
To provide pregnant tobacco/nicotine users with support and management to assist a quit attempt and make informed choices about their health and wellbeing and that of their baby.

Ensure that a Making Every Contact Count (MECC) approach is adopted in all contacts with pregnant women, Signposting individuals to other appropriate services to further support their health and wellbeing needs (i.e. weight management, social prescribers)
To undertake and record carbon monoxide (CO) monitor readings and explain results to women.
To provide and deliver evidence-based care and will provide clinical support and lead a designated stop smoking service Support compliance with action plans set up to deliver performance improvement and work with stakeholders to deliver KPI’s in relation to smoking cessation.
To provide educational/teaching to raise awareness of tobacco addiction and the effects on pregnancy.
Ensure national targets for reducing smoking in pregnancy are met in conjunction with other members of the maternity team.
To act as a representative on any trust wide projects relating to improvement initiatives on smoking cessation programmes as requested by the head of midwifery.
To utilise screening questionnaires (specific to nicotine dependency) to assist with planning and agreement of the most appropriate tobacco dependency support programme.
Communicate effectively with women to enable /facilitate women to meet their own needs with support and where required pharmacotherapy.
Support and motivate pregnant women to use their agreed action plan to change smoking behaviours and to sustain this change.
To have the skills to deliver factual information to pregnant women in a sensitive, ‘motivational’ manner, either face to face or via the telephone.
Ensure that a Making Every Contact Count (MECC) approach is adopted in all contacts with pregnant women.
Signpost individuals to other appropriate services to further support their health and wellbeing needs (i.e. weight management, social prescribers).
Enable delivery of smoking cessation programs
Provide educational/teaching to raise the profile of tobacco dependency addiction and the effects on pregnancy.
Work with health care colleagues to ensure that maternity staff are up to date with current practice and techniques in helping patient to quit smoking.
Advise pregnant women on the use of stop smoking pharmacotherapy, including NRT.
Ensure timely access to chosen NRT medication during pregnancy and using agreed protocol.
Undertake and record carbon monoxide (CO) monitor readings and explain results to women.
To be able to recognise a deteriorating patient and report to clinical staff when symptoms are not explained by / linked to smoking cessation.

Qualifications

- Educated to GCSE (or equivalent) grade C or above in English and Maths
- NVQ level 3 in Health care (or equivalent experience)
- Smoking Cessation Training Level 2 or willing to undertake within 3 months of starting in post

- Other training in health promotion interventions / behaviour change
Experience

- Experience of working in the NHS in the community or hospital setting
- Experience of providing healthcare, healthcare advice or health promotion advice to patients or members of the public

- Experience of providing help, support and/or counselling on a one to one or group basis
- Experience of using clinical systems
Skills & Knowledge

- Good knowledge and understanding of evidence-based practice in smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking and the benefits of quitting
- Knowledge of evidence based smoking cessation initiatives
- Computer literate, experience of using Microsoft Office software.
- Understand and maintain confidentiality
- Ability to build and maintain good working relationships with professionals / individuals from different professional backgrounds
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and listening skills
