Job overview

To be one of the specialist lead midwives of the obstetric diabetic team and liaise with the general diabetic team to provide ongoing education and advice to the pregnant woman with diabetes, their family and to other health professionals involved in their care. This is to include both hospital and possible community hub working.  To manage the care of pregnant women and give appropriate advice and treatment throughout the pregnancy.

Main duties of the job

To manage the caseload of diabetic women across the trust, managing time, resources and the clinics in which they are seen.

To lead in the running of the Midwife led diabetic clinics within the antenatal clinic and community hubs.

To undertake the role as link midwife with all maternity areas providing training and updates as necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A  well sought after permanent position to manage the caseload of diabetic women across the trust, managing time, resources and the clinics in where they are seen.

To lead in the running of the Midwife led diabetic clinics within the antenatal clinic.

To undertake the role as link midwife with all maternity areas.

An experienced midwife, she/he will be expected to continue with post-registration education and development to continue in the role of the lead specialist in diabetes for maternity services

Able to provide care to women either in the community or hospital environment and able to provide clinical support and advice to less experienced midwives and medical staff.

Able to work closely with antenatal clinic manager and head of midwifery to ensure that systems, policies and guidelines are in place, which meet NICE recommendations.

Liaise with the diabetic nurse specialist and other recognised specialist practitioners regarding the implementation of the diabetic programme at a local level.

Able to provide professional leadership, support and specialist knowledge underpinned by theory relating to Diabetic conditions.

Able to work across the Maternity services with the multidisciplinary team in order to provide uniform service of advice and support to pregnant women.

To facilitate and teach on an education and training programme at ward/departmental level for all relevant staff in relation to Diabetes

To undertake audit and ongoing analysis and evaluation of the obstetric diabetic services

Be the lead midwife in the running of high risk obstetric diabetic clinics and ensure that women maintain contact with midwives throughout their pregnancy.

To provide professional leadership, support and specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and evidenced-based practice relating to diabetic issues in order to reduce stillbirths, neonatal and maternal deaths as highlighted in Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle v 3.

 Able to undertake education and training at ward/departmental level for all relevant staff in relation to screening

Able to undertake audit and ongoing analysis and evaluation of Diabetes in pregnancy programmes in line with NICE recommendations.

 Advise on feeding of the neonate, liaising with appropriate staff and ensure postnatal care is appropriate, i.e. appropriate communication with GP
