We are looking for dynamic team players to join the anaesthetic department to enhance their training and contribute to the service in obstetrics, theatres and Intensive Care. We are keen to foster individual interests and will encourage continued development with regular teaching and yearly appraisal.

The post has specific aims and objectives:

We endeavour to provide similar standards of training and supervision, as well as assessments DOPS, Anaes-CEX, CbD, MSF) and appraisals, as other UK trainees on rotation in the hospital. The trainee will have an appraisal at the end of 12 months.

The post will be for a period of one year with provision to be extended for another year. This will include placement in general theatres, Obstetrics and ICU. The duties of the post will be to provide anaesthetic care to patients coming for elective and emergency care, anaesthetic services to the labour ward, acute pain rounds and covering the Intensive Care Unit. In particular, the post will include theatre sessions both accompanied with one to one supervision by Consultant Anaesthetists and solo lists appropriate to grade of training and competence with local supervision by consultants. In addition, there would be an opportunity to gain experience in regional anaesthesia and obstetric anaesthesia.

The department operates a full shift system and integrates Anaesthetic trainees, Fellows and Speciality Doctors into the on call tier rotas.

The daytime clinical work will comprise of sessions consisting of routine or emergency surgical lists, anaesthetic cover for labour ward and intensive care work (according to experience).

Clinical fellows will be expected to participate in the on-call rota along with the other trainees and specialty doctors after the appropriate competency assessments and sign off. There are 3 on call rotas and you will be expected to rotate between them all. The rotas are all full shift and resident on call including resident night shifts.

The rotas are compliant with the New Deal and European Working Time Directive.

The pay band you will be offered will be that operational at the time you sign your contract in line with Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service.

The on-call team consists of an ICU Consultant and two resident doctors for ICU, a Consultant Anaesthetist on call with experienced middle grade anaesthetist/ trainee resident for obstetrics and pain, and one resident theatre anaesthetist. The team out of hours, although having allocated priorities to roles, work collectively to cover the needs of the patients. This includes:

·         Obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia

·         Emergency theatre work

·         Intensive Care Unit and critical care Outreach work

·         Inter and Intra Hospital Transfers

·         Anaesthetic support to the wards and Accident and Emergency Department. Out of hours cover will usually include holding an emergency bleep. Anaesthetists are called upon for Cardiology emergency, Obstetric and Trauma Emergencies and pain management issues for all ages of patient and they are expected to respond in an appropriate manner. 

The Anaesthetists work as a team during out of hours and although priority call of duty will be to the area designated, demands in other clinical areas may require flexibility.

Unscheduled activities will be taken into account and time will be paid back accordingly. So far as consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder will be required to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues and perform additional duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The timetable will take account of departmental needs and the individual’s particular interests.

Activities under the umbrella of clinical governance such as research and development, audit, risk management or teaching will be carried out under the direction of the anaesthetic specialty lead and education group.

Teaching and Training

 

The clinical fellow will be allocated an Educational Supervisor who will support them with setting up their learning plans and help them achieve the mutually agreed learning objectives. The fellows will be required to have an active PDP (Professional Development Plan) and work towards achieving the PDP. The fellows will be encouraged to maintain their Royal College Anaesthetic logbook, own portfolio and also a record of Workplace Based Assessments (WPBA). The anaesthetic department offers an active teaching programme for the doctors in training within the department.  Consultants also provide tutorials for the doctors preparing for FRCA examinations.  Study Leave can be availed for CPD and exam related courses.

 

Audit and research

 

Participation in Clinical Audit is a requirement and an ongoing activity in this department.  Clinical research projects are encouraged. There is a simulator centre for training and upgrading technical skills for all staff.

 

Postgraduate medical education

 

There is a modern purpose-built postgraduate centre at Wexham Park which comprises of a lecture theatre, 4 seminar rooms, the main medical library, a skills lab and a large meeting and dining area.  The lecture theatre has computer facilities, and the library is equipped with on-line facilities.

 

Continuing professional development

 

The post holder will be expected to keep him fully up to date with their relevant area of practice.  Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the department, in line with prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate personal development needs.

General Information:

You are required to maintain registration with the General Medical Council.

All clinical fellows are expected to comply with the Trust’s clinical Governance arrangements including participation in clinical audit, monthly academic half day session and annual appraisal.

The salary will be at Nodal point 4 ST3-ST5 level with basic pay £55329 as per the Doctors and Dentists in Training 2016 contract.
