Consultant in ITU

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed Consultant Intensivists to join our team of Consultants in the Intensive Care Unit, which is part of the Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care. The unit has received the rating of Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.

These posts have risen following retirement of consultant with responsibilities in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthetics and service expansion. This is a substantive consultant post.

The successful candidate will join the team of intensive care consultants to cover the intensive Care Unit at Wexham Park Hospital. We offer full time ICM Consultant post or ICM job with additional sessions in Anaesthetics. We are also keen to support candidates with other areas of special interest (Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Respiratory Medicine) and encourage them to contact the department for further discussion.

We are keen to foster individual interests within Intensive Care Medicine, including research and quality improvement ambitions and will encourage continued development within a job planning review and appraisal.

Main duties of the job

The role of the Intensivists in Wexham Park Hospital is expanding. Intensive Care is working closely with other acute specialities and Intensivists are increasingly involved in the management of deteriorating ward patients in the form of outreach and medical emergency teams.  We have a daily Consultant delivered Intensive Care Outreach service and an Intensive Care Follow-up clinic. There is a well functioning Medical Acute Dependency Unit. The hospital is currently in the process of setting up the Surgical Acute Dependency Unit.

The hospital, which serves people living in South Bucks and East Berkshire, was inspected in October 2015 by the Care Quality Commission and was judged on its safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness to people’s needs and its leadership. The critical care and emergency services achieved the highest possible rating of ‘outstanding’ with the six other core services rated as “good”. The critical care team was praised for focusing on the individual needs of patients under exceptional circumstances.  The latest CQC inspection in November 2018 rated Wexham Park Hospital again as good overall.  Safe, effective, caring and responsive were rated as good, well led was rated as outstanding.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a full time substantive 10 PA consultant post which encompasses 8.25 DCC and 1.75 SPA but any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. Additional sessions may be available on request. The post will be subject to the Terms and Conditions of the new Consultant Contract (2003).

In addition to appraisal, the job plans of all consultants will be reviewed at least annually in conjunction with the Chief of Service and the Associate Director.

The proposed Timetable and PA allocation is indicative of the work required but is not rigid and will be flexible depending on service needs and interests of the applicant. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Deputy Chief of Service on behalf of the Chief of Service and Medical Director within three months of appointment.

The job plan will then be reviewed annually if necessary. It will cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities.  It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.  In addition, it should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues, this includes short periods of annual leave, sick leave, study and professional leave on a quid pro quo basis. Paid backfill is provided in exceptional circumstances. On occasions consultants may be requested to perform additional duties in emergencies or unforeseen circumstances or convert SPA time to Direct Clinical Care. Leave should not be taken during the full week of ICU cover.
